Timetable clashes with job -help!!!

Hi

I'm asking on behalf of my daughter- in case one of the MSE'rs has been in a similar situation.

Basically my daughter started working for a national supermarket nearly 2 months ago - having agreed her part time hours based on her student timetable last year -which she thought would be similar.
However, one day of the week clashes with her new uni timetable and personnel told her that if she couldn't work the hours on her contract she would have to hand in her notice - which she reluctantly did.

Is this right, or could she have asked them to consider reducing or restructuring her existing hours - it seems a shame to give up a job for the sake of 5-6 hours?

It seems unfair to me that they wouldn't even look at it - she does 20 hours a week, and the only bit she couldn't change at uni was the Friday- she shifted some of the other stuff about already before she approached work.

Any suggestions???:confused::confused:

  • I don't think there's any particular law that can protect her here. She wasn't able to work the hours they needed her to, so they had no reason to keep her.

Personally I know I wouldn't be able to do 20 hours a week. I did 16 last year, and I'm only looking for 12 this year.

  • is this your daughters 2nd or 3rd year now? our uni doesnt recoemend any more than 13 hours in 2nd year or 8 hours in 3rd year, as they are weighted 30% and 70% towards your final degree and dont have to just be passed like first year. i think 20 hours would have been far too much. i now work for myself, so i can work how much and how often i want, is this a possibility for your daughter?

  • i would say they are well within their rights she did have a contract saying what hours she would work and if she cannot work them she would be in breach of said contract.
However i would have thought that they would have looked at the hours ad tried to make adjustments. As there is always going to be this situation. I suppose it just depends on the company.
  • Seems a bit mean of them. My boy worked at ASDA until going to Uni, when he put his notice in they said no, he could keep his discount (10%) and come and work for them again at Xmas and in his hols, Nice one

My friends daughter works at M&S and they give her £1000 and transferred her job to near her Uni and she;ll work local in the hols,

    Some companies better than others

  • Thank you all for your advice and comments.

I think I'm getting over the shock now - I also think it upset me more that it did her..
My daughter has mentioned to me that she was worried about the number of hours she'd taken on.

C'est la vie, I suppose- hopefully she can find another job fairly soon to help keep her afloat.
    Thanks again.

My daughters uni also says max of 16 hours a week.

With the ammount of experience she has your daughter should find it easier to get her next part time job. It should give her an edge on others who have not done retail before.

My daughter is year one, starting next week and looking at ther timetable it looks like her classes clash on a Monday. Can that be right or are we just not looking at the timetable properly?

  • Not 100% sure but my friend said that she was being given £1000 if she transferred to M&S near her uni and worked at the other one when she came home in the holidays could find out if for sure if you need me to

It is entirely possible that there are timetable clashes, the best thing she can do is try and see either her course leader before the time of the clashes, or if thats not possible email them tomorrow. Most course leaders will check their emails everyday, and she should get a response before monday or first thing monday morning. Also bear in mind, there will probably be other students in the same boat as her.
Sometimes i surprise myself by being right.
