I sympathise with the OP and other posters' frustration at Royal Mail losing items. However Recorded Delivery isn't really intended for urgent or valuable items etc. Items go in the normal post so are no more secure than ordinary 1st or 2nd class post - all you are paying for is proof of postage and (supposedly) a record of the delivery.

In my experience Recorded Delivery often turns out to be an expensive way of just getting proof of postage because a lot of posties can't seem to be bothered getting a signature. I've had "Recorded" items pushed through the letter box when I was home and I know for a fact that the postie didn't even bother to knock and try and get a signature! This has happened on more than one occasion. It's also happened to friends, and with items I've sent recorded delivery to various parts of the country, so these are not isolated incidents.

I won't waste my money on Recorded Delivery any more. If I just want proof of postage I can get that for free, (and that in itself will provide the same level of compensation for lost items as Recorded Delivery - currently up to £41 - the cost of 100 1st class stamps). I send anything of value by Special Delivery.
  • recorded delivery though, is just that, proof of delivery - s if they fail to deliver, you dont get any proof

special delivery is the way to go, slightly more expensive but worth it in the long run

Well, I do remember there was one last year.
And there is a RM depot in Swindon. 2 or 3 to be exact.
The strike there was over 2 days. Half the staff 1 day, the other half on the next day.

I don't put things up here if they couldn't possibly be true.
So unless my Aunt is a liar, I chose to believe what she told me.
And I'm Sorry if that doesn't agree with you.

But, it still does not change my opinion on RM.
Losing 3 Recorded Delivery items in 2 months all belonging to the same person is completely unacceptable.
The only good service I receive from them is from my Postie. Can't fault him at all. Very polite.
In fact, as an ex-postie, maybe you can shed light on tipping at Xmas - are posties allowed to accept them from people? As he is the one RM member of staff I would bother giving anything to. Not even my aunt deserves one.

I'll be sending all things important this way from now on. Lol.
Just wish the women in the PO had told me to send it this way when she asked what was in my package. *humpf*
    Lol.

a strike over pay last year? given pay is negotiated nationally then that would be a national strike?
there is a document on tips and RM staff
i saw it a few months ago
i maybe able to source it
from experience it seems and accepted practice but it was never an interest to me TBH
i know some older guys on duties for many years could make quite a bit at xmas time

Yes, that would be good actually.
I would be interested to read it.
Obviously my aunt had other reasons for her part in the strike. Lol. *rolls eyes*

I used to work for a company that used to send about 10 recorded deliveries a day. I would then have to resend about half of those again a week or so later because they never arrived. Luckily they never contained anything irreplaceable.

recorded's get mixed up with normal letters; if the postman who see's the letter doesnt bother to get it scanned (by giving it to someone else before taking it out for delivery) then it'll just get delivered the same way as a normal letter.

re: the packet that still hasnt been returned. have you tried to make contact with the delivery office of the recipent. if it's been endorsed incorectly then it could still be there as per usual procedure to hold packets for up to 21 days before returning it to the sender.
    Savings Target: 100K by 2015

not really, all it requires is that the delivery postie obtains a signature
