Phone/TV/Broadband Packages

Not sure whether this post should be here...it seems to transcend the boundaries!

At the moment, my landline, Sky TV and broadband are costing nearly £123 per month. The individual expenses are, as follows:-

TV

Sky - £60.00 (entertainment pack with Sky Sports @ £41, ESPN @ £9 and HD @ £10)

Telephone

BT - £37.79 (line rental @ £12.79 and calls @ 25)

Broadband

BT - £24.99 (1MB BB)

Any advice welcome on how this deal can be improved!

  • Depends where you live, and which LLU broadband providers are available in your area. Also depends on whether you can get cable TV. Check here to see which LLU providers are available http://www.samknows.com/broadband/broadband_checker

Also depends on which other organizations you have a contract with. For example, if you have an O2 mobile phone then O2 broadband and phone might be the chepest option.

Change to BT's Unlimited Anytime calls package - £4.99/month instead of £25.

Opt for paper-free billing and get £1.25/month discount.

That price for broadband is ridiculous (expecially for that speed). Negotiate with BT or move on.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

What phone and broadband tariffs are you actually on? BT line rental is £11.54 with DD and paperless biling, Anytime calls are £4.99. The current package price for Line Rental, Anytime calls and Unlimited broadband is £27.99 + line rental = £39.53. So I can't imagine how you are spending £25 a month on calls when you could have them for a fiver? You must be ringing a lot of mobile or exclusive numbers?
Your broadband must be a very expensive older legacy tariff.
The best broadband deals will depend on your exchange. Go to https://www.samknows.com, and do an exchange search. Look for your LLU options, these will be the best deals.

  • @ johnofhertford - I live in Greater Manchester and don't have a mobile phone contract.

@ Heinz - I would prefer to subscribe to one supplier for all these services if possible.

Generally, just looking for a better deal than I have now.

The 'one bill' approach is rarely the cheapest option but sticking with BT will probably be your easiest option if that's what you want (I get a discount each year by agreeing to a new 12 month broadband contract and pay £7.50/month for BT Total Broadband Option 1 as a result).

The broadband services you can get are exchange specific, which is why you need to get onto samknows as advised. If you want more advice, post the name of your exchange and someone can check the LLU options for you. Gtr Manchester probably has a dozen exchanges.
If you want a single supplier then Sky is your only option, but this doesn't necessarily mean it will be the cheapest. Your TV service has no connection with the line rental/calls/broadband, so no real reason to bundle the TV in as well.
The advice Heinz has given is spot on if you really want to stay with BT. It won't be the cheapest route, but you can probably save about £30 a month just by changing BT tariffs.

  • One package was what I assumed would be cheapest, but it's not necessarily a preference.

02 is a no-brainer for broadband on that exchange, you can get LLU Standard (unlimited) for £12.50, or £7.50 with the 02 mobile discount. They also do Home Phone as well if you want to bundle. And don't forget the cashback.
You should also look at the Sky LLU prices in conjunction with your TV package-should be plenty of scope to negotiate, given that you are a high Sky spender.
