  • I am glad to say that your mother could get fantastic result in using a paste of henna on her hair for 1h and a half or 2 hours. Rinse, dry and then a paste of indigo (with a little henna) for 20 mins. Henna boy is a site for natural hair dye and advices. It works and leave beautiful shinny soft hair. They also have Amla powder which can be used prior to henna/indigo. It is really worse doing it. Good luck.

I used body art quality henna on my greying brunette hair for a few years because my sensitive scalp couldn't take any artificial dyes. Even Body Shop henna / Lush henna bars made me itch. Body art quality henna was great, and can be mixed with indigo to give a dark brunette.

A couple of years ago I took the drastic step of cutting off all my hair, down to a number 1 clipper cut, then started using body art quality cassia on it. If you prepare this like henna*, it gives a lovely deep blonde effect to the greys, and leaves the remaining brunette uncoloured.

Blonde blends much more easily with grey so my roots aren't so obvious when its time to re-dye.

I don't want to promote a supplier on list so if anyone wants to know where I got my cassia, pm me.

    * I mix 20g (I have very short hair even now!) cassia with enough warm water to form a yogurt consistency. Leave it for 12 hours or overnight to colour release, then apply to clean dry or damp hair. Cover with plastic and leave in for 2 to 3 hours. Rinse out (best done in a bath) and shampoo.

    This works for me!

Well after looking over this thread it seems I've currently got:

    Restoria Hair Lotion
    SuperDrug / Boots - Wash-in-wash-out
    Naturtint - Holland & Barrett

But there doesn't seem to be a clear, post popular winner regarding this subject.

I have dark brown hair with bits of grey on the sides and back of my head. As I'm only 31, I'm looking for something that doesn't make a mess and doesn't cost the Earth.

I use Surya henna cream. I've got dark brown hair with lots of grey and I've been dying it for over 20 years but had to stop after a bad reaction to dye. I hated having grey hair so tried quite a few natural dyes with varying results, Surya is definitely the best. It covers all my grey and lasts quite a long time plus if you don't use the full bottle it will keep, so if you've got short hair you can get 2 goes from one bottle. It's very natural looking too.

They also do a powder but I've never tried those, I can't be bothered with the mixing and mess. The Cream goes on just like a normal hair dye, the only difference is you do have to leave it on longer.

One other thing I like is they list all the ingredients, something that some other "natural" hair dyes don't do. I was going to try the Grey Buster dye that pinkcandyflossprincess recommended but they don't list the ingredients which put me off.

How long did you have to leave it on Ang?

Is it simply a case of put on; leave; wash out?

The tricky thing is, it's not all over, but some of the dyes state, they only target the grey.

I could be wrong, BUT Lush do a henna hair dye that is meant to go over grey hair.

It's all natural and smells really nice!
    A work in progress. <3

Sorry I've just seen your reply. :o

I leave it on for about 45 minutes, I've got about 50% grey and it's spattered all over my head so I just put the dye on all over, cover it with the little bonnet they give you and after 45 minutes wash out.

It looks natural because it doesn't give a complete block of colour all over the head, the grey goes a slightly different colour to the rest of my hair. It looks a bit like I've had lowlights done.

I have just used Logona hair powder to cover my grey, which is about 50% at the front and 30% at the back, my original colour was medium brown. I mixed three colours and left it on the full two hours. I also mixed it with hot black coffee and two tbsps of vinegar (which is supposed to make the colour take more).

Well the grey is now a bit gingery or golden blonde depending on the light and the brown is browner!

I am pleased with the result, much better than streaky grey and I am told it looks like I have had highlights.

It was very messy and time-consuming and the outlay was very expensive, but I used to have highlights done to disguise the grey but that was expensive too so I gave up with that years ago.

This link shows a before and after example:

    I am now a convert.
