Thanks, that's very useful and hadn't thought of that. Funnily enough, when he passed his test he went to the main comparison sites to get quotes on a 1.4 that we were thinking about buying him, and the cheapest quote he got for that was 1300!! Car was older too! Doesn't make sense, seeing as that was only a few months ago. Looks like we have a lot of trawling, and phoning ahead. Adrian Flux website looks promising though, but they don't do online quotes.

Have you tried i kube they are very very competitive.
What about pass plus,an extra 30% discount by many insurance companies once completed.:)

We looked into I Kube for my youngest, who passed his test 2 days before his brother, and he's 17, but he's decided to stick with his moped for the time being as the insurance is still far too much for him. I don't know if my 21 year old, who doesn't live at home, could be restricted by the I Kube, although it's worth mentioning to him.

Adrian Flux were the cheapest for my 18yr old-£1300 for (old) suzuki swift. they wanted £1500 for monthly payments so took out credit card with 1yr 0% for 'free' monthly repayment. the insurance also gave free house/car key replacement and car breakdown cover. he is only insured to drive that specific car. he agreed to pass plus for this (knocked £200 off). we phoned local council who gave him a voucher for that and it cost us £50 - well worth it without the voucher)

Thanks, I'll give them a ring tomorrow. However, I did a bit of research on Adrian Flux, and they had a mixed bag of reviews. Some people said they were awful and that there were hidden charges, whereas others couldn't fault them. My son wants to pay the insurance in full (he recently had a tax rebate, hence being able to buy a car), which is always best anyway (if you can afford it!).

Unfortunately the lad is justifiably in the highest risk group.

The best way forward is to purchase a £50 car, preferably a 2CV. Run it TP only and restrict the mileage. Then, after 12 months, he will have a good record and some No Claims.

You could also get him to pass the AIM (Institute of Advanced Motorists) test. Some insurance companies give a discount for this.

Some occupations are also considered 'more responsible' (opinions vary between insurers, so check around) and attract discounts.

    Hi,

Just thought I'd post an update. After a couple of days of searching comparison sites, I finally came up with a price of £1454 for Third Party F&T yesterday (Comparethemarket), which was good and down at least £500 from other sites and insurers. This was by adding 2 additional drivers with over 20 years experience, so well worth doing that. Then today I checked the 'Reducing your risk' tips on this site and tweaked my son's job title slightly. I now have a quote for £1009 from Admiral, Third Party F&T with no voluntary access (although when I phone them I may ask if an excess can be added to lower the premium further). This is again via ComparetheMarket, which so far has given the best prices across the board. I'm still hopeful that I can reduce it even further, maybe, by phoning up some Insurance companies and seeing if they can beat that price, but even if I can't then £1009 is absolutely brilliant for a 21 year old who has only held a full licence for 3 months!!! It's well worth the trawling, and looking at the tips on this site!

Oh and beware the GoCompare website, which for me added that my son had a Pass Plus when I ticked the 'no' box. It seemed to automatically set it at 'yes' and wouldn't allow me to change it. I did phone up an Insurance company (Swinton) as their quote was £1494 fully comp, and when they went through the details they said 'oh he did his Pass Plus in June then?', to which I answered 'no', and was told 'but you ticked the box to say he had'. I didn't, and wouldn't lie, so they took it out and the quote zoomed up to £2000. I went back in to edit the quote, but it kept reverting back to 'yes' for the Pass Plus!!!

for that kind of saving would be worth while doing the pass plus !!

Indeed, but on other sites adding the Pass Plus didn't reduce the premium by much at all, about £100. As we all know, Insurers are all different, as are prices on a day to day basis. I was amazed that it zoomed up to £2000 to be honest, so did try adding the Pass Plus on other sites, but it made only a small difference. I personally would like him to do the Pass Plus anyway, simply for the driving experience so I'll be working on persuading him to do it anyway.
  • I am male and did not get a car until I was 21 due to insurance costs. Even then the best quote I could get was 1,400. Though that was fully comp on a 2 year old Corsa. Now at 26 and 4 years no claims it is around £400
