Thank you - I thought there was something missing in your first reply. However, holding alt and typing 171 is still not working on my PC. Is there something I need to do to perhaps activate the alt key?

Only works using the numeric pad with num lock on.

As also posted earlier, running charmap will show you all the chracters for each font, together with the numeric code for using them

Thank you doverswot. That explains my problem. I don't have a numeric pad on my laptop - I just have the std qwerty keyboard. NOw that I have a better understanding of the problem and how to solve it, I'll use my desktop instead which has a numeric pad on its keyboard.

You're welcome - one final suggestion, in OpenOffice you have SpecialCharacter under the insert menu.

if you are using a popper word processor what most people would do to represent 0.66666 is to type a superscript 2, a /, and a subscript 3

maths editors work a little different though

Do you not have numbers on the lower part of the keys to the right of the centre of your keyboard, probably printed in blue, which you access by holding down the Fn key and pressing whatever letter key the number is printed on??

    Example:
