Special characters on keyboard

I would like to type the symbol for 0.5 expressed as a fraction ie 1 over 2 - is there a way I can do this? I'm currently using openoffice with vista. Thanks for any help.

Thanks lesalanos for yur quick reply, but I don't understand what you mean. I don't have a key with 1 over 2 on my keyboard - I know the alt key but what other keys do I need to press to get that symbol? Sorry if it's something obvious, but I must be getting dense in my old age.

on my keyboard, if i type
1 then
/ then
2
and highlight the 3 characters
whilst high lighted
press ctrl and alt together
release after the 1/2 press spacebar and a small 1/2 appears

Thank you - I thought there was something missing in your first reply. However, holding alt and typing 171 is still not working on my PC. Is there something I need to do to perhaps activate the alt key?

Thank you Ms Chocaholic, but that's cheating. I want to be able to do special characters - what if I want to do 5 eights as a fraction for instance. You won't be there to help me.
