Got another $16.02 to add to my total.
    £71.93/ £180.00
  • Done the Mr S shop for the week and spent £10 over budget - £55 spent. I did have to stock up on rice, pasta and dog food but a few treats crept in too as we're staying in tonight and I fancied some sweets.:o

Oh well, onwards and upwards I suppose!

£2.50 spent yesterday on junk. I was still hungry after lunch, so went to Sainsburys and got some crisps/snacks which were 3 for £1.50 and some sweets which were 3 for £1.00.

Can anyone tell me if I could make a pie that would be ok out of two tins of shippams chicken in white wine sauce that I bought to voul-et-vents with last summer. They have been sitting in the cupboard and I am not going to waste them if I can help it as I think they were quite expensive at the time. I have puff pastry in the freezer that I would use for the topping, and 3 rashers of smoked bacon I could throw in with frozen peas and sweetcorn????
    .

That sounds very yummy to me! :D

Have gone over my budget - will update siggy later - not by too much, though :)

    Hi everyone,

I used to be part of this challenge but due to DH getting a large payrise in June, I took my eye off the ball and just started spending whatever I wanted on food :o...... Anyway, we are planning to extend our house which will mean more money going on the mortgage, and in order to feel like we are still able to live well, I need to plan for what we are spending on all aspects of our lives, food especially.

We are 2 adults and 3 children plus one dog. Younger two have packed lunches, older DS now at senior school with a money-free canteen. The plan is to spend no more than $40 a month on his food, but it only launched this week, so watch this space.

We have our milk delivered, which although costs more per pint, saves me having to nip to the shops and buy those little extras that just seem to pop into the trolley all by themselves.

Our month runs 21st-20th due to payday, so I'm planning on $450 for October. I will post again on the October thread once it's up and running.

Looking forward to all your updates and tips :).

Spent €8.07 today on meat, cabbage and turnip....was going to use cabbage leaves from garden but OH doesn't do that so when I sent him to shop he forgot the milk that I wanted and bought turnip and cabbage that I didn't!!

Total now at €167.23 but hope that the only thing I want is milk between now and Thursday.

  • Spent another £69.22 on my last "big shop" of the month, although after following this thread for the month I am slowly coming around to the idea that I don't actually have to do the shopping on the same day every week and buy the same stuff regardless of whether or not I need it. Funny how I have just carried on doing what my mum did when I was a kid without questioning it.

I am sure that I have spent LOADS less, just because of this thread so I am delighted. However, I think I will stick to the same amount next month, because I will be starting to get a few extras in for Christmas. (We'll be having 3 Christmases - one early Dec when DH is home from Iraq for 2 weeks R&R, one at Christmas and another when he is home for good late in Jan!)

Thanks to everyone for their fabulous support and well done to everyone who has come in under budget or close.

P.S. can I freeze home made chocolate chip cookies?

Yes you can :D You can also freeze cookie dough if you want to make a double batch and then cook some up fresh at a later date

  • Seems like we are all having our end of month tot ups and I have to say I have only just spent over half my first budget. The fact i spent three days in hospital, one and a half nil by mouth probably helped lol.
Then my mother did a couple of shops for me which i am guessing would have cost me about £25 but I have been on strict house rest post arriving home.

One thing I have noticed though is doing this challenge I have really been thinking very cautiously about all purchases, using my freezer a lot more and not just to put things in, also taking things out to use lol. Have a nice healthy amount of blanched bargain veggies in the freezer as well as several healthy portions of casserole.

I am going to keep this running to the end of Sept as I do need a few more bits to get me through specifically soft cheese (low fat), cat food (ouch) and other odds and ends no doubt.
