We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy!

  • I've failed in my GC this month :(

I couldn't even estimate how much I have spent, but it's way over my £350 goal. On the positive side though I have been meal planning and we haven't had very much going to waste at all.

My new month starts on Wed and I'm going to aim for £350 again. I'm sure it is achievable, it's going to be hard though! :o

    Well done JulieGeorgiana, :T

And to everyone else for their sterling efforts. :T

The October thread will be set up soon by Pink-Winged and she will post a link in this thread so just keep watching for the next few days.

littlemissmoneypenny, have you tried keeping the reciepts or logging spends as they happen? It helps with keeping a running total. Well done for trying and keeping at it. Glad the menu planning has helped you too.

    All the best,

It obviously depends on what part of the country you're in - I'm in Dorset and they're still £1 for a pack of 4 at my £idl

If you go to £idl.co.uk and feed in your postcode, it will tell you what offers are relevant to your immediate area.....stops you trundling down there just to find that the offer has finished. I use it every day for that very reason. Down here, they have meat offers Mon-Wed or Sat & Sun only, so it pays me to use it every day to ensure I never pay full price for my meat :D

I can't fault their Chicken Breasts, Chicken Thighs or Pork Fillet Steaks but I've never tried their Minced Beef or Diced Stewing Beef. I love Stews/Casseroles but I don't have a Slow Cooker, and cooking a cheap cut of meat for 2-2½hrs kind of negates buying cheap meat in the first place, unless someone has a canny trick on how to cook stewing steak quicker?

I'd be interested in any feedback on their Beef Mince. I'm very picky about my Mince, and at the moment buy twin 500g packs for a fiver at M&S.....I know, I know....., but there's no point in buying cheaper mince if I'm not going to eat it, and £2.50 for 500g mince isn't a bad price - is it? I don't think so. Like longtallsally and her cheaper mince she tried this week, I can also taste the difference, and as a rule, the taste makes me feel a bit _pale_ lol

I hear what you're saying about beans BlimusOreilly - why have baked beans suddenly become so expensive? They're probably one of the food types that have had the biggest price increase in the past 18-24months. Beans on toast is no longer a cheapie snack, that's for sure.

  • Good afternoon everyone,
have just caught up with posts, spent ages reading them. This thread seems to grow every month. It is so good to see so many new people joining in the challenge. Welcome to you all.

Re over indulging children, my nephew was given every new toy which appeared on the market. Often one was not enough and he was given every model, colour etc. I thought it was obscene but his parents were very well off and enjoyed buying "things".
However now he is a young man and when he talks about his childhood does he talk fondly of the various action figures, computer games etc he was given, no, he talks about the time I spent with him on the beach writing/drawing with sticks, flying kites, looking for mushrooms, searching for bears in the woods, planting veg, building snowmen etc.
I believe the most important gift you can give a child is a memory, which they can revisit all their life and remember the time, love and care they shared with someone special. This we can all do no matter what our financial circumstances. So for those of you who are feeling guilty about not being able to "purchase" all that other children may be receiving, please don't beat yourselves up, because you can give your children what the others may never be fortunate enough to receive: your time.

Hope everyone has a frugal weekend.

NSD - target 18 days, so far 5!!
  • Afternoon All,
I hate being poorly, feel like going out and shopping for something nice. I managed to resist going out for the offers, so another NSD, whoop whoop. Been to FF for milk today, and Mr S for some bananas. Not too much damage to the budget. This seems to be the time for catching a cold etc. So I wish everyone that is suffering a speedy recovery. Spigs- big hugs.
Going to nip to the co'p later to snap up bargains, hoping for ready meals, got 6 for 62p each last week. However, maybe I should just stick to eating what I've cooked, at least I know what's in it!!!!!
I made the mistake of watching an Alex Riley programme about disgusting food which has made me seriously think about what I'm putting into my system. If it has put me off processed foods it can only be a good thing.:rotfl:
    4 days until payday.

    Hi All

Went to Mr T with my giftcard and spent £9.42. I actually went in with a shopping list after getting prices online and stuck to my list! It's amazing what I can do when I've got no choice..............

I've got all I need for dinners and lunches next week so I'm therefore declaring a budget busting £191.90!

That's £41.90 over budget, which seems pretty pathetic compared to some of you with families, but <making excuses for myself here> this includes everything I have spent other than bills, rent and travel. It's also MUCH better than what I used to spend before doing this challenge (primarily because I never kept a budget).

I've had a pretty bad history of money management in the past, which is gradually getting better, but part and parcel of that is that when I get paid I go and get a HUGE shop (even if I don't need it), because I'm worried that I won't have any money for food at the end of the month! I'm going to adopt (yet another) new strategy next month and take advice of others and have a 'money jar' which can be only be touched for food.

Gotta keep trying I suppose - I'll see you over in October when the thread starts :D
