Thought I was doing well with my 1982 calendar T towel.

Lets lay down a challenge for the oldest T towel still in service.

You've just made me go rummaging through my tea towel drawer cos I knew I had a calendar T-towel....result 1986...doh! 1a_y_sad.gif

My parents still 'use' a grandfather clock that has been in the family since 1790.

Wow, can anyone beat that? :D

We bought a Bang and Olufsen TV - will be 20 years old in March and still looks the biz.

My Aunty had a Bang & Olufsen TV that i'm sure was over 20 years old and still going strong when she died last year. I remember being impressed that my spinster Aunties had bought such a quality make

Also have a Kenwood handmixer - 24 years old - still makes really bad cakes (nothing to do with the operator)

Oh and I had a Kenwood hand mixer that I had for over 20 years too , possibly 25 years undecided.gif

It was still working when I replaced it , but was emitting a burning smell when used so I didn't dare use it anymore

Thought I might be able to beat it as I have 2 old tea towels which are still in service , although not as tea towels , one as a floorcloth and one for pressing clothes , but they're both of Scottish castles so there's no way of telling which year I got them and I just can't remember

Can you get tea towels carbon dated? :D

  • In a way, antiques shouldn't really count, because the insurance value outweighs the functional value - ie you can buy a decent clock for a few pounds but it costs them a lot more to insure their antique clock.

So antiques in that sense are anti-frugal.

I have a breville sandwich toaster which mum got in the early 1980's. Much more sturdy than the ones you get now. Also my iron is one of those heavy ones with a flex which is covered in fabric. Better than these namby pamby steam irons that can barely flatten a piece of paper. Ive had my saucepans 15 years.
Ive got one of those red dial phones, valuable but i dont use it cos its too noisy, and i can't 'press one' when i am asked to!!! :)

  • My neighbour was throwing away her 20 year old Creda Tumble Dryer as she was having a new kitchen. I asked if i could have it as I didnt have one. Ive had it two years now and it still works fine, although the paint has come off most of it and I have to put white melamine on top of it to make it look half presentable. I also think it dries better than my mum's virtually new Phillips Condenser drier.

    Hurrah for old stuff! :D

Reading the new posts reminded me of other old stuff I have.

I too have a Creda tumble drier (compact one) in the garage. It was my first MIL's and she got it about 1980. It still works fine, but have upgraded to a large one. May give it to next-door neighbour.

I have 2 bath and 2 hand towels that were bought for me in summer 1981 before I went to Uni. I used 2 of them today when I went swimming getting a bit threadbare now, but fine for dragging around a wet changing room. My mum has towels that I remember using as a small child and I believe pre-date me! (That doesn't make them antique BTW) As she says - quality counts, so proving that it's value for money not necessarily buying the cheapest that makes a good MSEer.

I have some which my ex MIL gave me in 1980, they are getting a bit thin but I still use them.

I also have towels which were wedding or engagement presents in 1982, still in good condition and used regularly.

I gave my sister my 10 year old microwave in 1992 when I got a new model, she threw it out last year, so it was 22 years old.
