our fridge and freezer are 19 years old.The tumble drier is about 14 I think.
Every washing machine has only lasted just over 5 years. The dishwasher died after about 5 aswell.
Our present microwave was bought second hand about 3 years ago in the market for £15 it looks a bit like our previous 16 year old one but is a bit snazzier as it has an LCD.
  • We bought a Bang and Olufsen TV - will be 20 years old in March and still looks the biz. Also have a Kenwood handmixer - 24 years old - still makes really bad cakes (nothing to do with the operator)

I had a microwave that had belonged to my parents given when i left home. It was 17 years old when it packed in - when i was in hospital having eldest one.

The replacement lasted 3 years and packed in again when i was in hospital giving birth!!

The next replacement gave up this weekend (less than 2 years old), and so did the vaccuum cleaner (just over 2 years old)!!!!!!

I daren't post the oldest electrical item i've got on here, just in case i tempt fate and that packs in too!!

    I have:

    1. Electra tumble drier which will be 20 years this summer and still going strong.

    2. A cylinder hoover which is the same age and has "Hotpoint, made in West Germany" on it. It has fantastic suction and beats my mum's new Dyson by miles. The recoil for the plug still works perfectly and I still have all the different end nozzles for it (touch wood, touch wood, touch wood.....) I love it. I must admit though that hoovering is my most hated job so it isn't something I do a lot of (twice a week at the most). It only loses suction when the bag is pack-jammed full too!

    3. Ironing board is the same age and a set of Prestige, copper-bottomed saucepans are too (all wedding presents).

    4. Panasonic music centre (with radio, tape and turntable) which has brilliant sound quality and was bought in 1979 (my dad has the same one too). No cd, of course, but it is connected to a separate cd player. The sound is 10 times better than my hi-fi stack system.

    5. Database console with games which was bought in the early 80's I think. Still works!

    6. Intellivision console with lots of games and still worked the last time I got it out!

    7. Commodore 64 from the 80's which also worked the last time I tried it.

    8. Handheld pacman game with quite a large, clear screen bought in 80's (my younger brother and I were heavily into computer games in the 80's)

    9. Baby blender (I bought it when I was pregnant with my eldest daughter who is now nearly 18!)
  • we were looking for new gas fires and invited bgas round to give us their sales pitch as our 2 downstairs gas fires have metal plates under that give the original manufacturing dates (1964/1969 respectivly) and the gas man went away having told us to be honest that todays fires just don't match the heat output or longivity of the ones we had which he gave a clean bill of health!

You can no longer get spares, but a scavange round the local tip/reclaim yard managed to get the spares that I needed.

Clothes, I still mave my lucky exam socks from doing my o-levels!

My Mum still has & regulalry uses the ironing board that my Grandad MADE for my Nan in 1945 when they couldn't buy one anywhere. The board part looks like it's made from a piece of maghogany furniture & gets re-covered with layers of old sheets every so often. It didn't have an iron rest originally but Grandad added one in th 60's I think, when they became trendy. When he originally made it he soldrerd all the legs etc together & even built & soldered on a folding stool so that Nan could sit down to iron. The stool folds up flat along with the rest of it, the folding mechnisim is very smooth. I've looked everywhere for one but can't find one, Mum says I can only have her's after shes dead & gone!

I know its a little bit off topic but I would like to nominate my Tea Towel that is 27 years old.

It is a little frayed along one edge for about 8 inches but is still regularly used and washed.

I suppose you are thinking that I could pass any old Tea Towel off as that age.

Well this one has a calendar for 1978 on it neh neh neh neh neh.

I can tell you that xmas day and boxing day were on mon/tues of that year.
And I celebrated my 16th Birthday on a mon that year(actually I could tell you that anyway as the next year I remember having my 1st driving lesson on my Birthday and I remember that that was a Tuesday thinking about it I may have been wrong if 1979 had been a leap year).

An incident I thought was rather amusing a few years ago was my other half was cooking(Bar b q of course)and said could you bring me out an old tea towel well this one came out of the cupboard 1st,it was only then that I realise that it was so old,so I said this one ok 25 years old,oh did we laugh(honestly it was funny at the time).

Thought I was doing well with my 1982 calendar T towel.

Lets lay down a challenge for the oldest T towel still in service.

  • My parents still 'use' a grandfather clock that has been in the family since 1790.

My dad uses a pair of binoculars that belonged to my great grandfather and saw service in the Boer War (1899-1902) - incidentally as part of the first territorial army regiment to see active service.

    In terms of clothes...

When I was an usher at friend's wedding, I bought my morning suit from a second hand clothes shop. It was 1950s, but the second choice was one made in 1910! The only reason I didn't buy it was because it was as heavy and thick as carpet!

I've also got a pinstripe suit and a dinner jacket from the 40s, both bought from Oxfam in 1990 and still worn occasionally.
