Old appliances still going strong!

Was just wondering how many people have appliances that are still going strong against all the odds? I have...
  • An Indesit automatic washer still going strong after about 27 yrs of regular use.
  • A set of 'Carmen Rollers'!! about the same age, (must have had loads of dosh about that time!), that I still use when I want 'big hair'

Up until 2 years ago I was using a 33 year old indesit gas cooker. It was older than me & had belonged to my Nan from new, until she moved to a new flat with a fitted kitchen. It was a fablous cooker & part of me was very sad to get rid of it, but I was getting a new fitted kitchen & it came with a free cooker (which doesn't cook evenly & lets the heat escape but that's another story). The old cooker got a new lease of life though.........I gave it to the salvation army who were going to gas-test it & as long as it was safe would re-house it with a family in need.
My Mum is still using a 20 year old bendix chest freezer and a 35 year old kenwood food mixer which was a wedding present and gets used at least twice a week, although she sends the food mixer off for an annual service every January. Wish my phillips tv/video combi was a sturdy, that broke down after 16 months!!!!!!!!!!!

I still have my staple opener, ruler and bottle of tipex (amazing how long a bottle will last if you use the thinner - which they no longer issue to staff as its a hazard) from when I first started work 23 years ago !!!!

Aside from that I have a Carmen Big Shot hair dryer - at least 15 years old and going strong.

My mum had a Servis tumble dryer for over 20 years, she got a new one under a hosehold policy on the grounds that parts were no longer available, bet the new one doesn't last as long. I had a reconditioned £99 Hotpoint washer for over 10 years, don't really know how old it was. Still got various small appliances like an electric knife I got when I got engaged ( for the first time) in 1982, so 23 years hard labour.. just watch it will die next time I use it. Not been too lucky with fridges and freezers but I have now got decent brand on both and so far so good. My grandma had a cooker from new in 1925, it was still working fine and used every day when she died in 1986. I am on my fourth cooker in 23 years but my previous one has been recylcled to a friend.

  • My parents are the kings of keeping appliances going. They've got:

A 21 year old Saisho TV - has never given any trouble.

A 15 year old Bush video - works perfectly

A 25 year old Hotpoint fridge - generally ok but the seal is starting to go

A 21 year old 'ghetto blaster'. Tape deck is shot but they still use the radio.

A 45 year old portable record player (Bush, I think). Mechanically perfect but the speakers are a bit crackly.
