Opinions also required on white paint please, if you'd be so kind.
Almost all of my life I have lived in houses with wallpapered walls. My Mother was a fan of huge flowers and swirls.
All my own houses as an adult have never had walls good enough for just paint.
I've worked my way through this house and gradually all the plasterboard has been replaced and I now have walls good enough to paint.
The skirtings and doors etc are oak, white ceiling, white coving. I bought some Dulux 'Natural Calico' paint for the smallest bedroom, it's basically a pale cream colour but I've just painted one wall and it's a bit drab looking so I stopped.
I'm now thinking of just having white emulsion but as ever, I'm dithering and there's no-one here to bounce this off so can you lot either persuade me it's fine or put me off it?

Ohh......
I lived for years with magnolia paint as I was a student for years, then my final rental had a huge bamboo pattern wallpaper
After that experience I've painted my rooms different colours but not over the top, my sitting room is green for instance but a very pale green.
I think brilliant white would be a bit stark and cold looking?0 -

Googled the Natural Calico - it looks nice!
I think it would need a couple of accessories here and there to stop it looking bland though.;)
Maybe some nice brightly coloured blinds??Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

I think a lot depends on which way the room faces. I have a friend who painted her whole house white to get rid of the orange and purple (!) she inherited. She had intended it to be undercoat but loved it so much she kept it, and I have to say her house felt lovely and fresh and airy. (High- ceilinged south- facing Victorian terrace.) She had LOTS of pictures, and colours in the curtains etc so it wasn't stark, more a backdrop to her pertty things.
When my children are bigger I'll be doing the same. There's no point yet as the walls'd be absolutely filthy...They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.0 -
I have white painted walls in my smallest bedroom - it has pale beech furniture and blue accessories/bed linen etc, and it looks fine.
I wouldn't want white walls in any of the bigger rooms though - I've variations of buttermilk (ie a warmer deeper version of magnolia) through my house instead - it especially looks good in my living room, which is south-facing, with white doors and coving etc.0 -

I'll be interested to read the responses to this thread as its a bit of a debate in our house at the minute.
Our bedroom is large, bright and airy - 16ft x 13ft with big bay windows. My plan is to have the black glossy Ikea fitted wardrobes on one wall. I then want to paint 2 walls in white and then have a feature wall with an LCD TV. I plan to paint that wall either a nice rich purple colour or maybe a vibrant bright pink. Then I intend for the curtains, duvet and accessories to be the same colour as the feature wall.
OH is horrified at the thought of the white. He is happy with just about any colour but cannot cope with white.0 -
I have the Natural Calico in the kitchen already but it's the actual Dulux kitchen paint, the Natural Calico in the bedroom is from their Endurance range and it's a lot darker.
I don't think I'd like white throughout as my concern is also about it being stark but I fancy a white duvet cover with a big turquoise & green flower motif on it. ( I am my Mum, lol) The shade the calico is now, I think it would be hard to get it to go with anything other than neutral or brown shades.
I thought when you got older you got less fussy and more laid back? *insert rolling eyes smilie*
I'm supposed to have this painted and finished for Monday.Herman - MP for all!0 -
Im loving the Dulux 'light & space' range(think its called that) The Nordic Spa (softest green ever) is the colour my spare room is going to be... calm but still light and airy. My mum has the natural calico going on, its nice too.Light Bulb Moment - 11th Nov 2004 - Debt Free Day - 25th Mar 2011 :j0

Choose the colour match to go with your feature wall - it wont be white.
Our feature wall is a deep purple in our bedroom and has 3 neutral walls which was already matched (think its dulux) in the brochure. We have the purple silky duvet and crystal & black chandelier (pretend tho! lol) and candle sticks etc. Its a smidge goth in keeping with my style but not so much hubby minds. Oh the joy to be rid of coffee n cream colours:D:D

I like this look...and it's pure white. I'm just not sure if I like it because there's so much wood offsetting the white though. Not sure if I'd still like it with 4 white walls and a carpet. :rotfl:
Do other people do this too....or are you all able to 'just' go buy something and be happy with it?:D
