First baby on the way, tips welcome!

Hi Ironman, congratulations on impending fatherhood! I'm 29 weeks gone myself and have been trying my moneysaving best to get everything I need for the best price. I have found so much on Gumtree, some real bargains. It can be especially helpful if you already know the sex of the baby. A week or so ago I got a bin bag full of 0-3 month baby clothes (about 75 items) for £15.
As this is our first child family and friends have been very generous, we've already had presents from lots of people as well as the MIL's friends (who we've never even met).
The thing that I find strange is how many people say "it's your first so you'll proabably want every new!". My reply is always "not at all - if you've got stuff going spare send it my way - it will be greatly appreciated!"
I recommend having a good luck through your bounty pack and make sure you apply for everything you are entitled to. After 24 weeks you can apply for your health in pregnancy grant (£190). Also sign up for all the mother and baby internet sites and parent clubs with Boots and Sainsbury etc. I signed up to the boots one the other day as they were giving away a free parenting bag (even though I probably won't shop that often at boots as there are cheaper alternatives.) Still it's something for nothing!
Keep us updated with how the missus is doing and good luck.0 -
Thanks, I keep seeing on here about the Mum and Baby sites, although we have only found one so far that dishes out freebies!
As I said before I know we are definitely getting the Pram, Cot, Moses Crib??!! as presents off family so that is a great help. I think we can look into it a bit ore once we know the Maternity Pay my GF will receive.
I have just read previous post saying does my oh WANT a year off to look after the baby, I know it probably wasn't meant to come across like that but I feel like I'm locking her in or something! I think she wants something like six months off but I want to make sure she CAN have longer off if needed/wanted.0 -
