  • My point in the first place is what happens after the 12 months expires and the machine goes wrong ??

The DTI say an item should last a reasonable time does anyone have any advice .
  • The only time I've seen a really bad error message was when I had one of those Intercoolers on it. I twice got a red ring of death message in the space of a couple of days. So I took it off, and haven't had one since.

What I have had is a 'disc read error' on a few games - mostly Dead Rising and Morrowind. Though in the latter case I had the disc replaced and they still occasionally happened. I've had three on Morrowind and two on Dead Rising. In those cases, though I think it's a software bug. It's been reported that removing the HD stops any of the disc read errors on Morrowind.

I can live with the odd error, though I am mildly irked given how bug-free the original X-Box was. I'm more annoyed about the fact that Microsoft are actually letting manufacturers patch games via Live. Previously they weren't allowed to do this and there were none of the stupid bugs we've seen so far.

ok, not exactly the same but........
my laptop seriously died on me. it had a 12 month waranty and was about 2 years old (so 12 months past waranty).
i spoke to a mate of mine whose a bit of an expert in consumer rights, and he basically told me to blag it, mention a few key phrases including - i know my consumer rights etc.
at first they tried to fob me off, but as soon as i mentioned the key phrases it was an entirely different conversation.
i had to get a report from an independent specialist confirming how much the repair was likely to cost (mine worked out to about 499 quid)
sent in to the store and they gave me a full 700 quid (original price of computer) credit for any computer i wanted.

basicaly, the waranty isnt worth the piece of paper its printed on.

    hope this helps

The Sale of Goods Act covers you for the 'reasonable lifespan' of a product up to six years. Reasonable lifespan is a tricky one, but you would expect an Xbox to last at least a couple of years. This would mean that you could expect a free repair if it goes wrong within this timescale.

In the first 6 months after purchase, it is down to the shop to prove that the item was fine when they sold it. After 6 months, you have to prove it wasn't fine when they sold it. With an XBox, there is enough evidence out there to prove that some boxes have faults (this should be enough to back your case up).

The Sale of Goods Act (SOGA) gives you rights first and foremost. It is the law. A warranty offered by the shop, or manufacturer is over and above your rights under this act.

If your XBox goes wrong. Your contract is with the shop you bought it from. It is their responsibility to repair the product (you should not have to deal with the manufacturers). If they can't repair, they have to offer a replacement.

If the shop tries to shirk their resposibilties under this act. Contact Trading Standards (in your local phone book). They can help you with advice (and sometimes action) to back up your rights.

had the three red lines and it was aweful customer service!

What should have been a 5 minute call took 20 and the guy just didn't understand a thing i said, ( his understanding of English was poor and it wasn't me speaking wierdly!)

I gave him my address and had to repeat each word 2 or 3 times and then spell it out and the respell it!

Its a pain and then he spoke me through some of the procedures but i couldn't understand him so just gave in and said ' yes' 'yes' and hopefully i will get it fixed and picked up!

Not happy lets hope the courier stuff goes well!

As to reasonable time, there is no definition. It will depend on the circumstances. There is also "fair wear and tear" stipulation, so if there is a fault, you may have to pay a contribution towards reapirs.
