Negotiating a new car - advice needed please!

Options
Evening!

I am off to buy a new car tomorrow!

Been for the test drive, chosen the interior etc and sorted out my finance. I'm going for a Fiat 500 1.2 Lounge on PCP finance.

I'm after some advice on what I should be negotiating for in terms of freebies etc when I finalise with my dealer tomorrow. Are there any standard things that you can normally get if you negotiate? Does anyone have any insider information on the things the dealer is most likely to agree to?

So far I've not tried to knock him down on price or get anything thrown in. This is my first time buying a car from a dealer, especially a new one. I'm very nervous but don't want to miss out on anything!

Thank you very much.

  • You're buying a car that is currently having no trouble selling, so the dealer will have little motivation in giving you much of a discount on the car or any optional extras. The Fiat 500 is a very popular car so Fiat dealers aren't exactly desperate to get them through the door.

I've no idea what the options list is on the 500 but I'd advise you not to expect the earth.

Log on to drive the deal and get the price of the exact car you want from them. Then go to your dealer and ask them to match it. They probably wont so then you have to decide what the value of the local dealer is to you. I decided it was about £100. But my local Skoda dealer got no where near the drive the deal price. He admitted he could not even get the car himself for that price.

Using DtD you can't do a trade in but that is easily solved by ebay or we buy any car .com
  • Agreed, no point to spend thousands lining the pockets of grubby dealers who view you with contempt. Extras like a tank of fuel, mudflaps, protective mouldings, some servicing deal (these are often good), mats, boot liner, proper spare wheel, decent tyres, protective coating (for the paint), etc.

Tell him to get the accessories brochure out and don't believe the bull that he doesn't know the price of everything.

And then walk away and buy on the net and save a fortune.

As has been said, you will be lucky to get a lot off a 500. To save waiting my ex bought an ex stock car with extras she didn't particularly want (stripes and stickers) and really struggled to get the price back to near list.

Beware of the the dealer trying to sell you special paint protection and an anti stain coating for the seats. If you really want them, you can get them elsewhere for less than half what Fiat ask.

You do realise that the petrol tank only holds 35 litres?

Ask for a full tank of fuel , and years tax . Saving you more or less £200

How much is the first years road tax on a Fiat 500?

How much fuel do they hold?

    ;)

I would think that the OP may have left it a bit late to start negotiations, having " sorted the finance ".

I'm sure I remember reading a similar story here, with the individual being given all sorts of scare stories about buying off the net, which ended in the person going via the broker and being sent to said dealers to complete the deal. I think whether they match it or not depends on a combination of how well they're doing and how much profit they want to hold out for. So you may have more luck when it comes to whenever it is they desperately want the sales. Dealer's honesty is inversely proportional to how desperate they are to sell.

Moral of the story, if you can't get the deal you want from the dealer, use the broker.

That doesn't mean he can't make money on the sale. Dealers get huge bonuses from the manufacturers for meeting, or exceeding, sales targets.

I once bought a new car for considerably less than the dealer paid for it. He was happy though because he made money in the long run.

I was only commenting on the fact that you were suggesting getting something out of the dealer, when it is possibly too late..:p

If the OP has signed finance documents, she/he will be lucky to have enough petrol to drive off of the forecourt.:D
