and how many people know the difference between i and p?

Probably very few. And knowing what they stand for doesnt mean they understand what the techical differences are. Many people seem to automatically think ~ progressive is far better than interlaced. Which whilst is technically true, many people would find it hard to tell a difference when displayed on a tv with a very good deinterlacer.

Exactly. I am no expert but trust what my eyes tell me. I have still to be convinced that HD is a 'must have' .

If comparing the best upscaled SD against the best HD (AVATAR say) then HD wins hands down

I have had HD for about 20 months now and certainly wouldn't go back to all SD.

I really do find it hard to believe when people say they can't tell the difference between the two. If they are comparing "apples with pears", perhaps I can understand it - but that isn't a valid comparison anyway.

If someone cannot differentiate between a "proper" HD picture and a standard SD picture - all I can really say is (with all due respect) "get your eyes tested" !

Iconic - HD is far better than SD. One show last night - Jason's shirt - it was purple and darker purple paisley sortof. Switched to SD, it was purple blobs. Do get your eyes tested or make sure your kit is set up correctly.
I did not defend the marketing labels. I don't like them, and they're confusing. Marketers aren't there to inform you, they're there to try to sell you stuff! They're not gonna put a sticker on that says 'this TV has a HD screen, but only an SD tuner, get yourself another box'! But seriously, if 'average Joe' (and I think you're maybe just above that) took 15 mins to research the jargon (on the internet, not from the salesman!!) he'd have a much better understanding of what he needs before spending a grand.

I agree with you, the only people that benefit from HD, are those that purchased TV's that are bad at showing SD material, or sit too close to their TV's for comfort.

It is all hype, mainly to line the pockets of TV Makers and the " Murdochs " of the world.

Yes. £10 a month for HD is just a rip off.

I agree that certain HD content is much better than SD if you have the right equipment but there is not enough good HD content to justify the hype.

Well I dont have sky (Mainly as I hate Murdoch). Upscaled pictures look fantastic on my tv and I certainly dont sit too close for comfort.

That's one in the eye for me:D

It's the other way round! We bought a HD ready Sony 4 years ago and it's still going strong. It's HD ready but only 720p.

I would love one of the new Sony's that have freeview HD, internet connection and all the bells and whistles but how do I convince her?
She, like me, has seen other peoples HD tellys and is not all that impressed.
