I use the handbrake to assist and hold the car on hills. With the handbrake holding the car and stopping it rolling back, there's more mechanical sympathy on the clutch.

Thank you all. I'm just so relieved I had a lucky escape.

Another thing my Dad has said is that all experience is good experience even if it doesn't seem so at the time.
