Burning smell

Changed enough clutches to know what kills them! Changed one this morning actually that'd been burnt out.

Holding a car on an incline on the clutch for protracted periods is a sign of low driving standard, think you'd be hardpressed to find many who'd disagree.

I was probably holding the car on the clutch. Would that still make it smell under the bonnet? Sorry for my ignorance, I know nothing about cars except how to drive them :o

But clearly not properly, holding a car on the clutch until it burns is just bad driving.

Well I was taught to hold it on the clutch by my instructor (20 years ago) but I do remember my Dad taking me out for a lesson and saying I shouldn't do that. I should have listened to him and not the instructor!

It seems to be OK today so hopefully I have had a lucky escape and not done too much damage.

Looks like I need to undo my low driving standard habits.

Shouldn't cause any impending mechanical failure, providing the car is driving as normal.

I find this hard to believe, it's always been a failure to hold a car on the clutch on an incline for protracted periods! Sounds like the instructor was a little confused!

I vividly remember thinking 'Well it can't do much damage if the instructor is telling me it's OK'. But then he was the one who said never trust anyone who drives wearing a hat and then turned up to my next lesson in a trilby!

We've taken it for a good drive and also checked that the fan came on after a while. It's driving fine and no warning lights came on.

Looks like I've had a lucky escape. Live and learn :)

    Thanks

This is so true. I should have known that at 17 - I certainly know it now :)

    Why the flippant remark?

Lets not forget that you have been driving for 20 years and didn't know that slipping a clutch for too long when on a hill in slow moving traffic is bad for the clutch and would make a burning smell.

If you read further through the thread you'll see that I thanked Andy for his advice and admitted that (and explained why) I had been wrong, why bother sticking your oar in now?

I came to this board for advice because clearly I don't know much about cars, not to be slated. I can't be expected to know everything!
