If you read further through the thread you'll see that I thanked Andy for his advice and admitted that (and explained why) I had been wrong, why bother sticking your oar in now?
I came to this board for advice because clearly I don't know much about cars, not to be slated. I can't be expected to know everything!
The reason I put my oar in is that is when I chose to read the thread, and also when I chose to reply. I also chose to ask why you made a flippant remark.
You came on looking for advice then when somebody that knows more than you about something you are sarcastic in your reply, I thought it was wrong and pulled you up on it.0 -
Wrists duly slapped. It's not how far you fall - it's how high you bounce back.... :jHappiness is not a destination - it's a journey

OP, as has been said, no need to take your car to a garage if the clutch isn't actually slipping.
You do need to revise your clutch control though... or drive an auto.:D0 -
Thank you gloomendoom. For a minute I thought you were someone else coming to have a go at my driving

It was the way I was taught but I will change the way I drive (not that I get stuck on hills very often
). Old habits die hard though but can't afford to change cars so will need to look after this one. It's not how far you fall - it's how high you bounce back.... :jHappiness is not a destination - it's a journey

I was taught to drive in a very hilly part of the country and being able to hold the car on a hill with the clutch was a normal part of driving. Even, a sign of a "good" driver with good clutch control. But, I'm not suggesting doing this for very long.0 -
Thank you Contessa, this is what I had been told, until yesterday I thought I had excellent clutch control

My dad has explained the mechanics of it all now. It's not how far you fall - it's how high you bounce back.... :jHappiness is not a destination - it's a journey

Yes I found this extremely daunting when learning, my instructor always seemed to know the best places with the steepest hills to make it as difficult to do as possible, even though i learnt in Leeds which is relatively flat on the whole, lol.I was taught to drive in a very hilly part of the country and being able to hold the car on a hill with the clutch was a normal part of driving. See, this is when you want a motorbike, rather than 1 dry clutch plate you can have many wet plates!
Back to OP, it looks like you have learned something today, what with all the sniping, but how come you have never smelled a burning clutch before in all your years of driving?
I've smelled it a few times(other drivers) and it's a smell I'll always associate with over-revving grannies as they try to reverse park whilst very skilfully holding the clutch just at biting point!0 -
Never been caught in such an awful jam on such a steep hill before I guess! It's not how far you fall - it's how high you bounce back.... :jHappiness is not a destination - it's a journey
