Thank you for merging this zippychick, all these ideas are fab :-) I started on a patchwork quilt tonight...well actually I resurrected it. I started it eight years ago when my daughter was born. Its made using all her beautiful baby clothes that she wore. No point in them being in a drawer for sentimental reasons. I'm hoping to finish it for Christmas :-)1

I started to think about home made gifts, I usually just make hampers for people - wrap 'em up really pretty, which you can see in my blog here http://nanna-kate.blogspot.com/2011/08/homemade-hampers-with-love.html. You can add stuff that's personal to the recipient and make it really bespoke. Like it's my nephew's Birthday coming up and I am making him one packed with Timmy Time stuff like PJ's (I got Iron on, personalised transfers from eBay), Colouring Books, Crayons, etc. I've got a box which I've covered in Timmy decoupage and will wrap in cellophane and bright blue and green ribbons. I've made a tiny Timmy to attach to the ribbon, it should look quite cute.
I've been looking around online for homemade ideas and a lot of them come down to bath salts and scarves. I really wanted something to wow people this year and then I came across this site: http://www.marthastewart.com/photogallery/gifts-for-her It's got some seriously stylish and expensive looking home made gift ideas. Can't wait to try some of them out!
Hope that helps someone! X1 -

I made MIL a crotched blanket that she loves and if you look on etsy or folksy they can cost £90 to £100
.
Maybe you should be making and selling them too then1 -
I recently put together the above for a friend. These make lovely gifts, and she was thrilled with it.
The mug cosy I knitted, then I got some hot choc sachets, which were on offer at the time in Mr S. Put some Earl Grey Tea Bags in the mug. I didn't do my sourcing very well as it was a spur on the moment thing, I spent £1 on the mug, and then saw the same in Wilkingsons for 59p. So I spent more on the gift than needed. With good resourcing it can be a very good gift to give, and there are tons of other ways to put kits together. Other thoughts I have are egg cup kits, this could include egg cups, egg cupp cosies, perhaps a cheap toast rack, or some tea spoons. You could add a nice box of tea, or jat of coffee etc.
Antother thought is a hot water bottle kit. This would include a hot water bottle £1 from Poundland, a knitted cosy, perhaps a book, depending who the gift was for, or some bed socks, some hot choc and so on. The imagination can go bonkers :-)

i'd much prefer a HM gift than - yet another - toiletries gift set.
I'm doing HM stuff for xmas gifts for the first time this year - aside from some flavoured vodka that I did for my cousin and they didn't like it so I was spending xmas with them and drank it myself haha!
I found a BN Starbucks xmas mug, the ones with candy cane handles, for £1 at a carboot last weekend and am themeing a hamper around that for my daughter who is addicted to them! Have sourced the hamper itself at poundstretcher, pack of 3 for £8 and am making choccy stirer spoons, biscotti, bought some coffee and chocolate sachets etc. Just need to find where to get cellowrap now and a nice xmassy ribbonTrying very hard to be frugal and OS - just plodding on and doing my best!

I bought the yarn for 3 crocheted afghans and the materials for 3 "sassy" aprons. Must get busy and start working on these projects.1

They take ages to make double one so that is probably why they are so priceyBlessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
