The average Sky customer now spends £508 a year (though that does include the cost of phone and broadband services if also with Sky).
No wonder Murdoch is smiling through the recession...No free lunch, and no free laptop

Although I give him some money knowing that I spend well below the average then some people must spend a fortune!0

I would not pay a penny piece to any company with links to Murdoch.
I prefer the Freeview channel line up to that of Freesat.
More does not always mean better.;)0 -
Thanks to all the board members who've made their suggestions - we appreciate it. I am now thinking of going with FreeSat, but honestly, am very disappointed with their measly 2 HD channels, taking into acct Sky's 40+. I need to balance the cost of the freesat unit/pvr and minor upgrades (lnb's, cabling etc) vs. Sky's free box and their monthly subscriptions etc. Calculator here I come.....or, any other thoughts or suggestions out there at all?
Thanks again.

A Foxsat PVR and any additional cabling run should pay for itself inside a year compared to even the minimum Sky sub (with HD) of £328pa plus any initial install costs.
To get 40+ HD channels you'd surely need to subscribe to all the relevant packs, which would cost you much more than the basic sub.
More Freesat HD channels will be launching over the next 12m.
Then every year after with Sky you'll pay as much again (plus whatever their annual price hike is on top).No free lunch, and no free laptop

Not sure which type of TV you have, I have a Plasma and I can hardly tell the difference between SD and HD programmes, I reckon this HD stuff is one huge con.;)0 -

HD is fantastic when viewed on the right screen from the right source.
Not sure how many people are actually doing that as opposed to being just caught up in the hype.
3D will be the next big push, some Sky football is already in 3D and they will be showing the Ryder Cup in 3D.
But who will watch it....
I did see a demo of 3d recently and it was amazing, but I won't be spending any money on equipment for that. (yet)0 -

In your original post, you said that one of the reasons that you were thinking of upgrading was because the children were asking for it.
Surely they are really asking for a wider choice of channels than you are currently getting, so Freesat or Freeview would be a retrograde step for them. I don't expect that they are worried if it's in HD or SD.0
