I ordered two of these and mothercare charged the card but since the cancellation the card hasn't been refunded so this morning i rang customer services. My mothercare accout is in my name but I paid using my husbands debit card. It turns out they have sent a cheque refund in my name, can they do this? Surely the cheque should have been made out to my hisband as his card was used. I don't have a bank account so no means to cash a cheque. The man at customer services was very unhelpful and said it was my fault as I put the billing address the same as delivery address so they've used that info to issue the refund but the billing address is obviously the same as my husband lives with me!

Similar story here, i orderered one of these car seats and although i have been assured that they have not taken their money, it is indeed in a limbo situation as the bank holds it until mothercare claim it. However and this is the problem, Mothercare have now cancelled the order and surely the money goes back straight into the account?....NO!!!! it stays as your account balance and minus the cost of your car seat and this is now 48 hours since they had cancelled the order. Then they have the cheek to offer free delivery for the hassle that THEY have caused. As a former supervisor in a major supermarket, we were always told that you had to honour misquotes and mistakes that u or the company has done...has the law changed or has major companies like Mothercare changed the goalposts for such mistakes? Finally before the diehards come on and tell me to lump it, i knew the risks as did all the users of this forum in placing these orders and i guess this is the hassle that we all have to deal with when we do indeed run the risk!!!! It would be good for someone who has the knowledge or indeed someone from Mothercare to clarify their position or the law more..regards

I dont think theyre doing anything wrong if its in their t&c's... also, if its the bank, not mothercare that is holding the money, maybe you need to contact the bank??!

They do not have to give you a refund, they have not taken any money.

When they cancel the authorisation (when you got your cancellations email it would have been done at the same time), it takes at least 2 working days for the card processor to contact your bank and then your bank will release the funds back to you.

Day one: Mothercare cancel the authorisation and email you.
End of day 2: The card processor tells the bank that the authorisation has been cancelled
Day 3 onwards: Your bank will put your money back onto your card - this can take up to 3 days so this is why it will take 3-5 days for a 'refund' to go through.

It is all down to the banks and card processors.

Mothercare only gets your money when they put the sale though - which they have not done.

In the same way as when you buy something it taes a few days for the sale to show on your statement. It never shows within the day because the card issuer and card processor are dealing with the transfer of funds.

You're incorrect on this part of your comment, when you pay by debit card it takes the funds immediately, I think what you are meaning is that it may show up on your transactions as "card authorisation £9" and only when the money is definately taken will it show as "Mothercare debit £9"

Then why have they sent some people a refund by cheque?

Sorry to come back to this again but Mothercare have taken my money they saidso on the phone today and thats why they've issued me a refund cheque. If the money was only being held by my bank to be released in a few days then why would I be getting a cheque? My question is are they allowed to refund me when it was my husband's card they debited. They are saying they can as the account is in my name.

I had the same issue with an insurance company - I paid my brothers money but they paid a claim cheque to him, as the account was in his name and I was told it was nothing to do with me and they basically told me I was silly to pay for someone else. I told them they were quick enough to take the money regardless who it was from - are mothercare the same? I do not know who is right or wrong in this situation though - sorry! It cost us £25 to cash his cheque!
