I feel like a right fat heifer now I've read some of the replies.
If OH and I were having sausages it would be a minimum of 3 each, but if the packet had 8 in we wouldn't save the additional 2, we'd have 4 each.
Tonight we didn't have time to cook a proper meal from scratch as it was late when we got in, so we had flavoured chicken thighs with chips. There were 5 thighs in the packet, I served us 2 each and told him that AFTER we'd eaten if either of us was still hungry they could have the additional thigh.
He hung about in the kitchen after I'd served up, I assumed he was tidying up (if I cook he cleans), it wasn't until he was sat down eating I noticed he was trying to shield his plate from me....cheeky so and so had nabbed the 3rd thigh when I wasn't looking. If he hadn't have wanted it I would have ate it after dinner rather than save it.

We had sausages, mash and veg for supper tonight.

DH had 3 fat veggie sausages. She is a size 10.

I had 3 finest pork and apple sausages. I am not a size 10.

DH (definitely has never been a size 10, except when he was about six) had four finest sausages.

DS (who is 6ft tall and runs 5 miles every morning before heading off to the gym) ate 5. Which even by our standards is a COLOSSAL AMOUNT!

So we got through TWO PACKETS OF SAUSAGES AMONG THREE OF US  Mainly because of DS, to be fair.

Meh. Usually I cut up a packet of sausages into chunks, fry off some onions, chuck in the sausages and tip a can of beans over with a few cubes of cheese, top with mash and bung under the grill. That is the only way a packet of 6 sausages can feed three of us.

Don't knock yourself out. It was a Saturday night. The sausages were on special offer :D

For dinner tonight I had steamed fried.. egg fried.. and 6 sausages.. 2 is a childs portion... my teens have 3 or 4.. how is an adult expected to live on a child portion of anything?!!

OH had.. half a gammon joint (1.8 kg one so not a slice!)..

I don't even look at those stupid meal plans they are for babies.. in fact.. my baby eats more than they allow for!!! and she isn't even 10 months old yet!! The should all be called Annabel Carmel meal plans!!!

  • I'm so glad I'm not the only one who find those portions tiny, my family are all big eaters but that said we don't generally do puddings except on Sunday's. And for the record we would probably have three sausages each, which is why we don't have them very often!

I'd have 3 and OH will eat 5. He's not big on veg to say the least, I know he'd actually prefer 6...or even 8....

If I dish up food I tend to give my family too much to eat. If they help themselves they tend to eat less. My portion control is not brilliant but thanks to this site I am a lot less wasteful than I once was.

Fairly typical portions in our household for OH, DD (adult) and self, all meat is from the local farm shop/butchers and I ask for how many I want and what size.

    Sausages - 3,3,1
    Pork steaks, medium,small,medium
    Butterfly lamb chops 1,0, 1
    Chicken breasts - medium- 1,1,1
Minced beef - 1lb (DD does not eat mince)
shin of beef/casserole pork or lamb 1.5lb
Fish usually a large fillet each of meaty white types or a whole medium fish each of more delicate types

Chicken - 3lb chicken = 1 meal for us and stock
4 lb chicken= 1 meal, 1 HM pie and stock

Joints always 3 - 4 lb which makes meal and a sandwich.

When I am stretching chicken or a pork fillet I will use about two thirds
of the above portions and add chorizo to tomato based dishes to go with
pasta or rice, and dumplings to the casseroles.

We probably have 1 or two non meat days in a week.

I am a bit over weight OH and DD are both slim and fit.

    Hi mardatha,

If we're having sausage and mash for five of us I use a five pound bag of spuds to make the mash, a massive bunch of brocolli, onion gravy and 16-18 sausages. Sometimes we have leftovers which are used for lunch the next day. Sometimes someone is hungrier than usual and hoovers up all the leftovers at the time. So for sausages this is the norm with us........

    3 for DH
4 for DS1 (17) who is a rugby player and is doing his best to eat me out of house and home right now
3 for DD (20) who only usually only eats two but sometimes wants another
3 for DS2 (11)who only really needs two but he adores sausages and is skinny as a rake so an extra one won't do him any harm.
1 or 2 for me because recently I have had a very poor appetite.

I think portion size varies from person to person and family to family according to their age and calorie intake versus their fitness and exercise.

We have an existing thread on portion sizes. I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the advice in one place.

If I am having toad in the hole I would have 2 sausages. If I was having a fry up then I would have 1 but these are proper sausages. OH who is a small skinny racing snake would probably have 2 or 3 in the toad. The ex who did a manual job would demolish at least 4.

    Hi Mardatha
I too have an RV, but fortunately mine's only ratty in the mornings, he's ok after 5 cups of tea & a bacon sandwich.
Mine would be ok with 2 sausages for breakfast but that is served with mushrooms, bacon & eggs & toast.
If money is really tight I cheat when I do sausage & mash as I eat the mash, veg & onion gravy & give him all the sausages, if I do a casserole, I fish the meat out & give it to him & I fill up on veg.
Mine will eat more veg now he's growing his own but will not eat fillers like dumplings & won't eat toad in the hole either.
    Hugs Hester
