Damaging an item when shopping?

My understanding is that if you damage something in a shop, you only have to pay the wholesale price as shops are not allowed to profit from damaged items.
Not sure if this is correct, but it's just what I understand.
Surely the price paid would be the cost to the business of replacing it, not simply the wholesale price. There will be other costs associated with replacing the mattress. Transport, disposal, staff time (to re-order), lost sales from having no display item to name but a few.0 -

I would have just claimed it was already like that and told them to eff off. I can see why morally you should pay but these things happen and if they're going to have goods out in display to let children sit on/lie one etc then there is always a danger of this. If they were that worried they should just have a catalogue and not let people touch the goods till purchase time.
I'm not a parent myself but I imagine if a kid is going to have an accident there is not much you can do about it!This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Being a display item it is/was conceivable that accidents of any number of varieties could happen, thats the risk the retailer takes and that should be built into their costings!!
Just because you right something off your stock doesn't mean you didn't pay for the thing!
Yes the OP should pay. It might of been an accident, but it's not the stores fault and they shouldn't have to pay for it. You have insurance on your car, right? That doesn't mean that you should have to pay if my child falls over and scratches your car...Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.0 -
What utter rubbish - most display items will still be saleable when withdrawn from sale (i.e. when the item is no longer stocked / sold through). Plus the bed store now needs to take another item they could of sold, put it on display and take a hit when they ever want to get rid of it.

Yes but if you tell the child he can clamber all over your car and have no problems with that and then he scratches it, frankly I think thats your fault and not the parentsThis is a system account and does not represent a real person. It's going to be like getting blood out of a stone now that they paid full whack for it.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
Not sure is its been mentioned as i cant be asked to check but the shop can only charge wholesale price, and NOT retail price. They cannot profit from an "accident". Equally they should not lose.
But as the op has a mattress now trying to claim the money back would be impossible, but for future reference refuse to pay anything but wholesale.Back by no demand whatsoever.0 -

No it wasn't ! The OP told us the child had widdled on the bed and that they were upset at being asked to pay for the bed that their child had damaged. They wanted to know if we felt it was correct that the store demanded payment (I've just re-red the original post and I can't see that the question of how much they paid ie retail or wholesale price was mentioned).
A lot of people have said that yes, they feel the OP should have expected to pay for the damaged bed.
Sure, it was an accident - but thats not relevant. Why on earth should anyone think that another person/company should pick up the tab for damage caused by that person or their children? I don't see that parenting advice comes into it - just common sense not allowing a child who is not fully toilet trained to sit on display items!ELITE 5:2
