Damaging an item when shopping?

faithcecilia - that's what I thought as well, they can only ask for what it costs them to buy the item(s) from their supplier(s), they can't ask for the retail price that they sell those item(s) at.
Which does make sense, why should someone who damages something by accident have to pay (let's say) 100 quid to replace an item that only cost the shop 80 to buy in the first place?0 -
OP - you should have actually paid cost and not retail price.0

Why should the shop pay for your carelessness though? The way you wrote this implies that until now you happily let your kids run around breaking stuff in shops and banging on TV screens.
I hope you didn't, but if you did, consider this a wakeup call.
No i do not let my kid run riot around shops etc, shes a very well behaved girl, shes only three and we are just in that stage where she is starting to use the tiolet herself.but sometimes has little accidents,i never refused to pay for it at any point, but my point is this,it was an ACCIDENT,not by neglet or not on purpose, how were we to know what was happening until after she had done it she was sitting quietly and never asked for the bathroom, which she generally does,i was just taken aback by the shops demand to pay for it there and then.0 -
I have actually paid for it at retail, can i still claim any cost back?0

Judas, Op has not said she wets herself on a regular basis..
dmg24, i never said that the op should not pay, i'm in the you damaged you pay boat, i was just taken back that it was all the op and partners fault becuase their child wet herself....
the op has only mentioned this one occasion, we don't know if she wets herself lots or anything, but people are calling them irresponsible and careless, with not much fact.
I agree that they should payOk, careless or not, that part is irrelevant. Allow me to rephrase, why should the shop pay for OP's child's accident? If the shop came into OP's house and broke/damaged something of theirs OP would want something in return.
That's for other people who may not consider shops charging for stuff that gets broken in store fair.
As stated already i am not against the op not paying, i was pointing your post out as it was so rude and judgemental, (the bit you skimmed over as irrelevant)
So just so we all know, yes the OP should pay for the damage. I hope we are now clear0 -
I cannot understand why you have paid them anything, what if it was something else and they asked you for £20000, would you still have given it to them?0

Wow Im shocked, kids will always do something, when potty training my kids, I still had to take them out and putting a nappy on them can set them back abit, granted I wouldnt of let them on the bed but my youngest still made the mistake in a taxi, it happens and its life. The shocking thing is if it was me I wouldnt of paid in the bed shop because simply, I dont have £1500
-
No i wouldnt,i suppose because i could i did and felt obliged to.0
-
I think you need to be in that situation to know what you would do.
If it was me and I had the money, I'd of done it just to get the hell out. I wouldnt of even bothered asking for the 'cost' price, just pay and run!0 -
The fact i was shopping for a bed for her made me more inclined to pay for it,after all i was going to need the matress anyway, with regard to only paying wholesale cost, that seems fair enough, but that could be open to abuse, the shop still has to restock and have lost the profit on that item whilst a more unscrupulous person could use that to their advantage,in hindsight i would have probably refused to pay there and then, let them call the police and see what arrangement we could come to,i wouldnt just cough up in future but hindsights a wonderful thing.0
