Digital Switchover by council contractor - multiple sockets needed, help!

So I've received a message from the council that they have appointed a contractor to visit my home to install the new Aerial socket for the new digital TV system in time for the switchover. However, I live in a flatshare with no living room, and we all use TV in our bedrooms. That means there are three sockets which need replacing, not just one. The guy who came round today to do it says that I would need to pay £75 extra for each.

However, why should I have to? I never asked for the digital switchover and I've already paid for sockets to be installed in every room. Why should I pay twice? I thought that was the whole point about getting it done for free by these contractors, that we wouldn't have to spend again.

Any advice would be of great help here.

If you already have aerial sockets why do you need new ones?

You dont need any changes to any sockets for digital switchover.

But why any one else apart from you should pay for your entertainment I have no idea.

Certainly wasn't being "Sarky" I am very serious that council tax payers should not be paying for any ones entertainment, and I wouldn't just state this for no reason it was because you asked on a public forum why you should pay for your own entertainment:

"However, why should I have to? "

The real question is why should I have to pay for it.

I thought everyone had freeview by now. I mean it's only £20 for a box. How many are still watching 5 channels?

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p

Contact your council or the team/company who deal with the issues around your property (if the council passed on the responsibiliy like an ALMO). Let them know what the individual contractor has said and ask them for their official position on it.

If you dont get any luck there, try one of your local councillors.

Again, why do you need new sockets? I'm using the one in my house that's been here for a good 20+ years. I merely changed the antenna. It is still a radio signal you are receiving, albeit digital instead of analogue. The only requirements is you have a TV or box to decode it and the antenna is capable of receiving the frequencies the six MUXs are on.

He was totally incorrect and has no understanding of it, the same as you. YOU DO NOT NEED DIFFERENT ANTENNA SOCKETS. You MAY need to change the aerial but that's it.
  • I live in a council block of flats and the council states in the tenancy agreement that nobody is to install outside aerials,or satellite dishes and all flats are connected via cable network which in our case is Virgin however a few months ago all the free-view channels where turned off by Virgin and if you wanted free-view you had to subscribe to Virgin and all we had left is the 5 channels BBC 1, 2 ITV, 4 and 5 the reason given was that due to the digital switch over in 2012 the council has asked various companies to supply all its flats with the right equipment so its tenants can receive digital TV Virgin lost there bid so turned off all customers which where not subscribing to them which meant all tenants could only receive the 5 terrestrial channels as per the agreement with the original cable company made back in 1995 so all those with free-view boxes and TV have to wait until the new company installs digital equipment and that's due to start 2011 and yes the tenant has to pay a weekly fee for this service. But in the mean while its back to 5 channels oh indoor aerials do not work wher I am

Not sure who you are stating is incorrect as your post is in-concise but both me and davidhwdn stated that there is no need for new sockets.
