Washing Up Methods

  • I know what you are saying MisterE but it's a question of being caught between a rock and a hard place. Do I run cold water or do I heat up water at my expense and not forgetting at a cost to the environment whether I use water from my tank or heat up a kettle?

    It's a dilemma.
  • I agree it is a dilemma. It is difficult to know what is the most environmentally sound way to do some things. Often, it is not clear cut.

I have a solution to the dilemma though! Alongside my water, electricity and gas meters, I need a how-much-am-i-damaging-the-earth meter which would measure everything I do that harms the environment. Just need to figure out how to build one of those now...

The biggest single waste is putting highly filtered ,expensively produced mains water down the loo.
But... you aint gonna get people to use rainwater from a bucket.
A greywater/rainwater harvesting tank system where you still pull a chain or press a button is the answer and should be mandatory for new builds, and tax breaks for retrofit.
But, Happy, you could use a bowl when rinsing thus giving the water a second chance to be re -used.

I use grey water from the bath to fill my cistern when I've flushed, when people find out they are disgusted by it! I've tried to tell them how disgusting it is for us to use perfectly clean and drinkable water to flush the loo when its such a precious commodity and there are people in this world who have no clean and reliable source of water. Its a bit of a hassle as I store the water in fivel iter plastic bottles and decant it by hand but there is only me in the house and its very do-able, I wish that houses that are being built now took water saving into account more (or at all!!)
