By the time the handbreak is sorted I would of already spent half of what I paid for the car on repairs. When I could of bought a more expensive car to begin with.

Yes, but you only paid £500, and believe me, a repair bill of £250 is pretty good going for any car nowadays. It is a sixteen year old car, and the handbrake cable could well have snapped through corrosion, but more than likely it has stretched. The rear drums on Fiats have a habit of seizing up if not used/maintained regularly, so a bit of care with those would not go amiss.
If you want to keep motoring costs down, then buy a Haynes manual, a decent set of spanners, and get your hands dirty. Not only does this save money, but you will be more likely to spot problems ro wear, before they turn into something more serious.

Previously had some work due to overheating. Previous invoices I have state:

    Attend to Coolant loss/overheating
Fit new Water pump and Filter

Has your car got a temperature gauge, because I know some very basic Fiats do not (Puntos etc), and the warning light will simply come on when they overheat, which is too late.
You will have to keep an eye on the coolant levels - I would do it daily, and the colour of the coolant, and inside the oil filler cap (Look for coffee coloured sludgy deposits).

I wouldn't normally say this..... But as it's the legendary Fiat Cinqucento, I think your better off throwing money at something else.

Friend of mine went through 7 clutch cables in as many months in one of those, because they were never designed to be right hand drive and the LHD was a conversion with all the pedals and controls being on a system of levers and pulleys.
