    £500 and a private sale and you expect no faults?!

    And in answer to your question, no you have no rights to go back to the seller, it was a private sale weeks ago and only for £500 and with or without sold as seen, you haven't a leg to stand on making a claim!

    I wasn't intending on going back to the owner. I was questioning whether it was worth keep getting repairs done

    Go and buy a Haynes Manual.

    Handbrake cable is cheap and should be pretty easy to replace (never worked on a Fiat, but done plenty of handbrake cables on other cars over the years).

    Spending half again as much again over the purchase price on repairs is nothing for a £500 car - you wouldn't realistically expect a £750 car not to have similar "wear and tear" faults.

    Carry a few house bricks with you and chock the wheels whenever you need to park on an incline... :D

    I know a few cinq owners who do this :D Apparently the handbrakes are notorious for problems

    I know I'm wasting my time since I'll be on ignore...but where on earth did you read that?...the question asked was;
    "Do I put it down to wear and tear? Or get rid of it all together?

    To which my answer would be;
    You were unlucky with the fuel filler pipe but everything else I'd put it down to wear and tear, something like brakes is down to maintenance, however old a car is.

    Thanks for all your helpfull Comments.

    Taken it to a friend today who has confirmed the cable has snapped. His advised to get new drums and shoes as well and the breaks shouldn't need doing for the length of time I will have it.

  • I'm dubious that the drums need replacing, especially on a small car at such a mileage. Sounds more like the brakes just need "roughing up", cleaning up and adjusting by somebody with a bit of experience. A car like this should go to the scrapyard with the brake-shoes it left the factory with, even more so with the drums. Handbrakes sometimes are incorrectly set by "weekend DIY'ers" who just wrench the cable adjustment up, then can't understand why it all suddenly fails again.

    Andy

    aawwwwww. My first car was a cinq sporting and all you have said went on mine too. the handbrake cable was an easy fix. You could also leave it in gear to stop it moving (Or in reverse if its pointing down hill ;) )

    Yes watch the thermostate. I got a crack in my coolant pipe which got left so long the whole pipe disconected! Radiator. New fuel tank. It was an R reg which in the end had 80k on the clock (I think, fortunatly someone wrote it off for me, couldnt believe the price the insurance co gave me for it!) Just to give you an idea of how much the car had done with all that. 40k in 2.5 years I think.

    No lie I spent more on that car then was paid for and it was a hunk of junk help together with spit and prayer but bygum I loved that car! Beat a golf off the line in it once! Think it used the whole flippin tank but I didnt care at the time! I was too full of the speed LOL

    Edit to add, I had that car 05/04 to 10/06, awww, worry free days :D
