Damn, I knew I should have filled that spare suitcase with something - we normally bring empty cases over to fill up with stuff to take back to the UK.
ToysRUs had signs up saying no Elmos until next year. English ones had been retailing for Ca$140 (£70) and French speaking ones for CA$70 (£35), so there was obviously a supply and demand thing going on!
As for bargains in Canada - clothes, shoes and bedding are the biggest savers. Some electronic gadgets ae cheaper, however only cameras, laptops and handheld games are worth getting as they have universal voltage adapters. Other stuff only works on the 'american' 110v supply. Savings on electronics are not that good though and can probably be equalled in the UK online.
One novel idea going on here are the 'sweeteners' for signing up with a broadband provider. They go for long contracts here (3 years on broadband/mobile phone contracts etc), but you can currently get a £600 laptop for £100 when you sign up (or £500 off other electronic stuff). 3 Years broadband costs £500. Other suppliers are giving out 19" TFT monitors free with sign-up.
REALLY cheap stuff in Canada: eating out, cars (and parts for cars) and petrol - all HALF the price of the UK. Yes, really! Oh, and houses too...
Canadians don't really shop online (unless they live in the interior) - there are too many Malls and stores anyway, so the competition in 'bricks and mortar' stores means that all the bargains are in the shops, resulting in very few internet bargains.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
A toy hasn't flown off the shelves this quickly since the video game console PlayStation 2 was introduced in 2000, said Jim Silver, editor-in-chief of Toy Wishes Magazine, a trade publication. Even the first Tickle Me Elmo released a decade ago sat on store shelves for nearly three months, readily available to consumers, before it took off.
"It's absolutely huge," he said of T.M.X. Elmo. "This ranks as one of the greatest introductions of all time."
Although the article goes on to say:
Jill and Oliver Graham of Bothell managed to snag one T.M.X. Elmo doll by ordering the toy before the September release date from Toys "R" Us in Lynnwood. Jill Graham said the entire family adored Elmo, until they brought T.M.X. home.
Jill Graham unwrapped the toy and put in the batteries so her 20-month-old son Connor could play with it. At first when Elmo started to laugh, Connor said "hello."
"Then he pushed it, kicked it and ran away and hid," she said. Now the toddler "sucker punches" the doll whenever his mom turns it on.
