Dough Balls for a Dough Ball !

Okay, we love dough balls from Pizza Express and actually Somerfields hit the mark too, but I decided to try HM. Now my bread making skills are extremely limited ie never had any success:o

So tried the following recipe

300g strong white flower
7g easybake yeast
50ml olive oil
water

One trusted, much loved 10 year old tupperware mixing bowl (which has taken some heat before ...ahem. Preheated top oven and turned it off to cool with door open so it was slightly warm - you know whats coming.....

Mixed and kneaded by 9yr DS, covered put in oven to rise. Take one half a lager, BBC1 7pm, Masterchef...relax. Forgot about it, on my return the dough hadn't rised the bowled had sort of well sagged.

So I tried to make these dough balls they turned out like little bullets, not sure the ducks will approve. DH says bowl looks like a bedpan, I said it could be modern art actually entitled 'the trials of a novice bread maker..'

Does anyone have some advice other than don't put plastic in a warm oven :o

I've made garlic bread once, that is the extent of my breadmaking. It was the recipe from the back of readymix pizza base packet. I know very OS NOT!!!!!!

Anyway I put my dough in the airing cupboard, it seemed to rise a little bit but since I've never made it before, Iwasn't sure what to expect.

They turned out fine, but were abit messy to make.
  • Thanks Linda, I've just dropped some heavy hints (almost as heavy as my dough balls but not as painful) re BM for Chrimbo.

Sadly no airing cupboard as we have a combination boiler. I am going to try again less flour methinks.

  • Jo, I've not made dough balls, actually I'm not entirely sure what they are :o but I make bread by hand and I never put it anywhere warm to rise. I simply leave it in a bowl on the kitchen counter covered with a damp cloth (to stop the top drying out). I leave it for 2 hours and it has always risen. Putting it somewhere warm speeds the rising up, but I find it easier just to allow a couple of hours for this.

Is your yeast out of date ? If it's too old it might have lost it's oomph;)

How to describe dough balls, light, bit bigger than bite size pizza dough remnants. Served in pizza rxpress with olive oil/garlic dip. Not as heavy as garlic bread. Oh and so moreish...

Yeast is brand new, but having said that checked BB date as if anyone picks up out of date in error it's me !

I think I'm expecting the exact science of bread/dough making to just happen for me, but only a bit of perseverance will do that :)

Todays attempt leeks and bacon quiche and yet to decide which cheese. I'm okay with pastry - fingers crossed.

My attempts at making pizza dough by hand have always been dreadful (could lay a new patio with 'em!) so I use my BM.

Have often wondered if I could use the same dough for dough balls...presumably in the restaurants they'll use the same stuff? DD had a school trip to pizza express last year should have asked them then.

I'm sure someone must have tried this! I keenly await the rest of this thread...

  • I admit I cheat and buy Sainsbury Pizza dough mix...make mix up as instructions (just add water & knead a bit by hand). Then when it gets to the instructions about rolling out I just make them into balls & pop them in oven. can't remember how long for - just 'til they look golden brown.

I tried an Asda pizza base mix after reading about it on another thread the other day and it gave instructions for 2 pizza bases though as it was feeding 5 I made one big pizza and one smaller garlic bread with my own homegrown garlic no less. It was really, really easy and came out very yummy. I actually just left mine on top of the oven while it was pre-heating and they were fine, you only leave them for 10 minutes. The packet gives instructions for a few different things. I'm sure you could just leave them plain and make small balls with them or whatever you fancy.

  • We have had them with spagetti bol or pizza. Also used them on buffets.

  • Upside down pizza - shove in dish, top with tomato and cheese?
