Yes it is possible to remove type or even handwriting. Download a demo of vuescan ,you need the mac version (I dont think it has any restrictions in the trial period) and Scan them in at the best resolution you can('Archive' quality if it gives that option).
The retouching is just trial and error really ,especially if the print is over faces.
Cant really recommend a retouch prog for mac, I use photoshop,we have an old version on mac but I mostly use the new one on PC ,there are some free programs about if you google something like 'freeware retouching program for mac'.
Anything with clone tools would be useful to remove the writing and Gimp has that option and I assume works on mac.I've only ever used it on linux.

Sorry for sounding like a know all (I do retouching for my work and so does hubby).

Are you allowing the mac to update online? Ours does if it is connected to the web which it hardly ever is, or you might just need to reinstall the OS from the install discs.

Pretty easy to do in photoshop (although i use paintshop pro)

This is the first I have been on the Mac , lost patience with it, was crashing and basically doing bizzare things all last week. It runs an update every week and i've run various checks on it , think I may have to find the orignal setup disc. Been on it for an hour just now an so far so good... fingers crossed then I just need to get these photos scanned in.

I'm sorry I offered now, along with the wedding photos , I have two full shopping bags to do....
