Stopping smoking saves dosh. There's a thing.

  • I know you've probably heard it all before, but here goes.

My friend died just over a month ago from massive brain tumours and cancer of the lymph glands that spread from the lung cancer he was diagnosed with just over a year ago. All caused by smoking just 10 roll ups a day for most of his life - he wasn't a 40 B & H a day man by any means.

From his research, the average time left once diagnosed with lung cancer was 6 years. He kept himself goin with this info, but sadly it wasn't to be.

I was the kind of person who smoked a bit at school, and as i got older would smoke a few while drinking. Now i don't go anywhere that i'm even remotely tempted.

To give you more background, he was 54 when he died, and i am only 27.

Finding out he finally died tore away at my heart. In January '06 he was finishing his last dose of chemo, and talking about when he was going to come back to work. The plan was that the chemo would sort it all out, and he'd be ok.

My advice to you all if you have the chance not to end up finishing your time this way. Think not just of yourself (not easy i know, when you have an addiction) but of the family who will have to attend your early funeral, including (if you end up like my friend) the grandchildren who are old enough to talk, but too young to understand where their doting grandad's gone.

Sorry if anyone finds this lame, hard to believe, of preaching from someone who doens't know what it's like, but i felt the need to add my bit.

Rest in peace Roy - we'll always remember you, and we think of your family at this difficult time - one month since his cremation tomorrow.

Some friends and I are thinking of running the London marathon in '07 or '08 to raise money for local and national cancer charities in his memory - anyone who wants to sponsor us of get involved PM me - lots of reformed smokers running the marathon would be great.

We walked out of his cremation to "Always look on the bright side of life" (his choice!), so i think that would be a good way to end this post

  • A close relative had both their legs cut of due to the circulatory damage before they were 40. It did not stop them smoking. There was probably little else they could do to occupy their time before the inevitable end.

Another Allan Carr convert here - a couple of months in now and I feel great. To be honest most of the time I dont even think about it (I did get a self hyponsis book/cd too).

Good luck and well done to all stopping!

What are those smileys doing to each other?! Ohh, group hug.

All true and real, and if it can help just one person give up, then it's not all in vain, that's how i look at it.

  • I've just come up with a list of twenty-one reasons most relevant and personal to me why giving up smoking would benefit me. In order of priority believe it or not, financial reasons came in right down at number sixteen. Okay... maybe 'giving the Witch Of A Mother In Law one less reason to feel superior' SHOULD have come in further down than number eight, but some things are worth more than money ;)

Finances are VERY important to me, yet I'm looking at fifteen reasons that matter even more than more than money (eighteen if I'd have counted my four kids individually instead of as one) that demonstrate to me why continuing to smoke is a Very Stupid Idea Indeed. And I'm staring at it with a fag in my hand. Jeez.

But... (after another ten minutes of wrestling wrestling with thoughts of The List, the 'can I really do it' demon and the idea that once I've posted this I'm going to have to go through with it if only because my pride won't let me do otherwise... this is my last one. Really. Absolutely. Definitely. (Shut up and go convince yourself offline, woman. Good grief. Think of the bandwidth...).

I'm off to join the Quitters on the other thread now, but thanks to everyone who's contributed to this one - it's prompted a decision that's long overdue.
Eek! Someone's stolen my signature!
  • When I was giving up, I'd pay the cost of a packet of fags onto my CC debt every evening via internet banking. It made for some interesting statements - pages long they were.

Good luck to all. Each day is easier than the last.
 What if the hokey cokey is what it's all about?
