If you save 300 in the bank you would save with no interest 3600

have a look at a compound interest calculator. If for example you can put in 300 pcm into one of alliance & leicesters new 12% regular saver account.

Which would give you at the end of the year 3842 which is a interest profit of 242 quid.

Add into this any savings from life assurance etc

And I would say a conservative 2 quid a month on lighters, ashtrays and other smoking gear

    Super savings :D

Obviously the £1's in a jar is a short term thing. It's their to inspire you. Once you had done it for a 5 or 6 weeks you obviosuly wouldn't leave £400 or £500 lying around in the house and the bank would come in.

If you stick the money in the bank every week you don't get to see the jar full of pound coins when your tempted for a smoke, so won't see your achievements as seeing it printed on a paying in book isn't the same as a jar full of pound coins.

Small loss of interest for the sake of quiting smoking for life, has to be worth it if it works.

Obviously once a few months had passed of being smoking free, you'd stop the £1 idea altogether and just save or pay off debts with the money instead.

It's the first few weeks that are hardest for smokers to quit after all.

  • I too am giving up smoking, scheduled for the 1st October. Tried before several times using NRT and Zyban and although they were successful short term i started again :( I'm going to be doing cold turkey this time which I know is the hardest method but I am even more determined this time to quit. At the moment my 30 a day habit is costing £7.89 a day or £236 a month although it is probably slightly more than that given that i can smoke 40+ on weekends.
My strategy for saving the money from this is rather than put the money in a pot (where it's a temptation to spend and not actually working for you), i'm setting up a daily SO to my savings account for the £7.89. At least then I can see exactly how much i've saved and it's working by gaining interest...at least thats the plan lol.
Best of luck on your quit!

    Hi MonkeySaving

Can I ask why you are waiting until October 1st? Is it a motivational thing?

Well, 'The Book' has arrived today, all I need now is the courage to actually start reading it and to start not smoking. Already picked up the 'it's not giving up anything' vibe!

If me and OH are successful it will be approximately £300 a month, yes, £300, saved. Oh my.

As my debt is not as huge as some on here I guess I thought we were doing OK. Then I realised just how much smoking cost. It is sort of a 'hidden' debt as OH usually buys them. I think that was really my lightbulb moment, the smoking thing. I know it sounds daft about not realising exactly how much we spent, but I guess that it is similar to other addictions - not facing facts.

I don't mind mentioning it on here as no-one really knows me, however in the real world I don't want to tell anyone. Is this a good or bad thing?

Here's to life, and debt changing, challenges.

    Hello

    brilliant!:T
in the news today (the Metro I think) they were talking about all the hidden extra costs of smoking too - in cleaning products, fag burn damage to furniture/ carpets etc.

  • I was really really gutted to read that Allen Carr has announced he is dying from lung cancer. I used the book myself to stop and cannot impress enough how EASY the EasyWay is (hence the name I guess). I'm just scared now that people will think "well why bother reading his book if HE died of lung cancer"?. Truth is he gave himself an extra spell on earth, whereas if he had kept on smoking himself, he would have died a lot sooner. Guys, give it a try. If it works, you save your life and xxx amount of qids without any effort whatsoever. If it doesn't work, you lose the cost of a paperback.

That's really sad, I didn't know. Hopefully it will make more people buy the book instead, to avoid the same end.

Freeloader, it was your posts that got me to the point from the other thread, so thanks again.
