Stopping smoking saves dosh. There's a thing.

Well, 'The Book' has arrived today, all I need now is the courage to actually start reading it and to start not smoking. Already picked up the 'it's not giving up anything' vibe!

If me and OH are successful it will be approximately £300 a month, yes, £300, saved. Oh my.

As my debt is not as huge as some on here I guess I thought we were doing OK. Then I realised just how much smoking cost. It is sort of a 'hidden' debt as OH usually buys them. I think that was really my lightbulb moment, the smoking thing. I know it sounds daft about not realising exactly how much we spent, but I guess that it is similar to other addictions - not facing facts.

I don't mind mentioning it on here as no-one really knows me, however in the real world I don't want to tell anyone. Is this a good or bad thing?

Here's to life, and debt changing, challenges.

Here's how I gave up. I bought 400 cigarettes and said to myself after I smoke the last one of these that's it. I then had about 3 weeks in which to prepare myself mentally for giving up. I appreciated every last one of those fags, and I haven't smoked since.

If you smoke, youre 4 times more likely to lose your eyesight in old age.

    just say no?

    Im with you hello

Ive got my crutch, I have smoked ( well lit up, then chucked or given away ,smoked 2 in entirety ) less than 10 in 2 weeks. Usually I would smoke 10 before 11.00am. ive been to the pub with all smoking mates, and not missed not smoking after food.

Do a google for SilkQuit. its a pc programme that runs on your PC that counts up how much life youve saved, money youve saved, so far its saying Ive saved 72.60 but im sure it should be more than that.

Is it the Allan Carr book?

It helped my mother quit smoking after reading it (she had been puffing away 40 cigs a day for the last 40 years).

    Good Luck xxx
  • Hi All I'm 3 weeks yesterday I was very aware how much I spent on Fags so I invested in Paul McKenna's Stop smoking cd now I know it works for some and not others. But it Worked for me I dont want a cig I havent wanted a cig since day 3 or 4.

I have been out 3 times on the drink and still been fine!
My sis in law bought me a money pot so I am putting my fag money in that as soon as its full I am paying off my credit card!

    Apologies for being smug!
Isn't the knowledge that comes from experience more valuable than the knowledge that doesn't?

    J_B.

thanks for that. The first paragraph says about the life insurance.

Now, MSErshow does it work. How long do you have to have not smoked for before you get a reduction in costs for your life assurance? I see some shaving of costs made herre too ;)

  • I don't know how much cigarettes cost now, but if you go by the fact that you spend £300 a month on cigarettes. Each day you don't smoke put £1 in a jar, within a few weeks it'll start mounting up and being in debt seeing money piling up may just spur you on to not smoke.

If you can't just cut out smoking straight away and need to reduce the amount first, just divide the £1 by how many cigarettes you smoke in a usual day. Then just do the sums of £1 minus however many cigarettes you smoked that day and put it in a jar.

I think if you can manage a month of not smoking you will easily be on the way to not going back as seeing £300 in a jar in coins has got to be a good feeling. It might even be enough to pay off one of your credit cards

    Another thing going2dierich

If you save 300 in the bank you would save with no interest 3600

have a look at a compound interest calculator. If for example you can put in 300 pcm into one of alliance & leicesters new 12% regular saver account.

Which would give you at the end of the year 3842 which is a interest profit of 242 quid.

Add into this any savings from life assurance etc

And I would say a conservative 2 quid a month on lighters, ashtrays and other smoking gear

    Super savings :D
