Don't put yourself down OP. You are not 'just' a Mum, it is a very important job, and not one that requires you to be a computer genius! Not everyone knows how computers work or what to do about back ups etc, but that doesn't mean you are any less bright than some of the other posters.

When people know how to work things, they can be incredulous that some people don't and that might make their answers sound terse and to the point. Ignore the tone. There have been many lovely people taking their time to respond to you and giving you advice and I for one hope that you can retrieve the lost data x

Tell me if I'm missing something, but - your laptop is 8 years old, and you're talking about voiding the warranty by sending/taking the disc to someone other than Acer...? An 8-year warranty?

I would forget the warrenty and do what needs to be done.

Out of interest has this drive been atached to another computer as a secondary yet?

Thank you Donnie....but what does that mean? :o

He turns up late and starts rambling over subjects that have already been covered.
Seems some people can't be bothered to browse the thread before just posting.

Anyway... did you highlight what actually happened when you moved the HDD to an external caddy?
Have you spoken to the computer shop? Were they able to give you a more accurate diagnosis? Did they give you an appraisal of what they actually attempted?

I honestly don't think that for £30, your computer shop attempted the low level scan. You really need to find out the full diagnosis from them.

Personally, I would ask try to retrieve the information myself before handing it over to someone else, but the problem for you is that you have relatively little experience with technical issues.
You do need someone with a litle more competence to assist you. The ACER offer is not unreasonable, but you need to make it absolutely clear as to what they will and can do with the HDD.

Before you shell out a stupid amount of money, do try the free alternatives mentioned in this thread and post details of what happened when you tried to copy the files and did you assess the damage with ontrack or are you assuming the worst?

A new hard disk is £35, forget about the warranty, it's accidental damage which isn't covered, assuming the laptop switches on, just put a new hard disk in, and if you need to call on the warranty in future, stick the old disk in, they will never know.

Send your faulty hard disk to Acer, and there is a reasonable probability you will never see it again, or it will take months to come back, or it will come back wiped with windows reinstalled over the top of your photo's.

The other question I'd be asking, is how often is anyone going to look at them, by the time they are in old age, they will have a tens of thousands of photos from 8 onwards to choose from.
