Excellent. I was unsure of the call on leaving a message, but it seems to have been welcomed by the recipient. Seems you made the right call about it Pr1madonna and others.

Also; there has been an update on the Nearly Legal (Barrister) page.

It seems the suspicion (Pr1madonna) that it was J.Dunmore who lodged a complaint against the original MSE thread on this discussion was valid. From this it certainly seems to me he made a complaint... although I recall no posts making threats to him at all.
[Edit 08/09/2010. Mr Dumore has contacted me. He asserts that the MSE thread was taken down because it contained personal information about it and, he alleges, threats to him]. That would be Jeremy Dunmore. Mr Dunmore’s twitter page gives as his personal website link a blog by the ‘Ascender Group’. Mr Dumore’s twitter account has many tweets about the Butler ‘campaign’. Mr Dunmore’s public entry on linkedin [just removed, link to cached version] states he is “Founder and Managing Director of Ascender Group“

I still think GMTV have a legal case to answer. Labelling a lawful tenant a squatter, on national television.

[I should add that, very strangely, I happened to watch the original broadcast in the presence of a solicitor myself. A solicitor who has acted a few times on behalf of landlords in gaining possession of their properties - the lawful way. The solicitor told me in law courts there is no real definition of a "squatter" but I'm not sure what they were leading to, or if they are fully correct.]
  • That's a great step forward. Shame Suzy and Jeremy don't take the opposition voices seriously. If they had been polite and not ignored the concerns in the first place then it may have been over a long time ago.

I really hope Carmen gets her day in court.

What I do think is true, is more tenants are running into financial difficulties, so more landlords have tenants in arrears. And that renting property has risks, you have to be careful before over-leveraging for BTLs, or even renting out your primary home.

Also, as with other businesses which can fail due to risking too much in over-expansion during a boom.... recession can be a business risk to many primary home landlords / BTL landlords.

Happy to charge £1,235 per month for her house though + £15 per day late rent fees, and class it as a "private let": "not a business."

It's strange how Suzy Butler's primary home squatter campaign coincides with ever more landlords (professional and amateur), feeling the consequences of tenants being in arrears.

My own personal view of what makes a professional landlord, they make themselves well aware of the law or take solid professional advice, carefully check tenants before agreeing tenancy contracts (or have their agents do so), can follow lawful action even if a significant problem occurs (getting a problem tenant). And are not overly-leveraged.... so could ride out voids, problems, and even significantly reduce rent if it's necessary to attract a good tenant.

400,000. That suggests to me many tenants can't afford current rent levels and some landlords will have to adjust their expectations on what they can charge.

TONIGHT: Nightmare Tenants (Thursday 26th August)

    Still online for viewing:
    Begins:-

Julie Etchingham: Good evening and welcome to the Tonight programme. In recent years the Uk has enjoyed a Buy To Let boom with more people than ever using property as an investment for the future. And for a while it seemed like a safe bet. Property prices kept increasing and the rent kept rolling in. But in these recession hit times things are no longer that simple. According to the latest figures a record four hundred thousand private landlords have tenants who have fallen behind with their rent. And it seems getting them to pay up or get out is not always that easy.

    Ends (at end of show):-

Jonathan Maitland: Just to get things in perspective be you a landlord or a tenant, we should point out that at the end that these battles occur only rarely. Which is just as well. Because if the current trend continues, by the end of this decade a fifth of all UK families will be living in private rented homes.

I think there is one more thing we can do, now we know contact is not unwelcome.

Can someone on here who knows their stuff give her information about housing, Shelter etc? What the best approach would be, who to talk to - anything that actually helps them in their current situation?

    I would start here:

The Housing Advice & Tenancy Relations Team provide free Quality Marked advice for people living in private sector housing.

I would love to sign this petition

    http://www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/suzybutler

but I really don't like the language used in it. Can't we ask for the law to be enforced in a more dispassionate and less incendiary way?
  • Now I'll bet you that the petition AGAINST SB is more popular than her own.:D
