Wow. I think there's sizeable sections of the HiFi Press that would take issue with the assertion that the reproduction quality of a turntable is merely determined by the speed stability.
They are free to hold any view they wish - just as I am free to hold the view I hold.

Tell me - what pickup arm and cartridge would you typically fit to one of these SL1200s for optimum results?
You know something, I would use the default with a nice Ortofon cart (or perhaps a Sure) - but then I made decent money doing it - I was not a 'opinion tourist' on the matter looking to argue semantics. Naturally if I had a small penis and wanted it to look gay in my sitting room whilst stroking my chin in self satisfaction - I'd pick one of the inflated price offerings you mention. But for transcription work in a paying studio where time is money and quality matters - yep, the 1200 series are mighty fine and that's why you'll find them everywhere.

Agreed - Mr Oink in particular......you can hear noise from a turntable motor?????? above the music????..wow...you must be superman.
No. Did I say that anywhere? It's a common argument of the 'belt drive' fraternity - but not a view I subscribe to.

However your advice on using the mic socket is pants dude. Levels and equalisation being the issue.

Wow - somehow I think you guys are taking this all too seriously !!

If the OP wants to archive a 'serious' vinyl collection, then why not give it all the seriousness it deserves?

Because you are assuming that is what he wants to do. Assumption is worthless until it is supported in facts.

OK, if you're going to drag the conversation onto base insults in order to make your point.....

I think you've descended into trolling now because you don't like someone challenging your view. This is not helpful to the OP and could run and run, so I withdraw safe in the knowledge that the advice I have offered is good.

Have a nice day now Googler.

Because you are having boring technical arguments which are no closer to answering the OPs original question which was
Could someone explain to me the best way to do the above so that I can record my lps?
I have a laptop and a player with turntable and amp, and already have recording/conversion software.

I told him what I did to achieve the same thing !
Thanks to MSE I cleared £37k of debt in five years and I was lucky enough to meet Martin to thank him personally.

It isn't 'pants' if it worked for him - god if there is one thing I hate is forum 'know-it-alls' - it is obviously something he tried and worked ok.

Exactly.....Mr Oink claims to have worked in a recording studio so obviously feels like some sort of god in this respect.
What he doesn't know is my level of expertise and the software I used to record/clean my recording.

He even claimed that the noise from a motor would affect the sound by saying "Whilst a belt drive may reduce some coupling noise from a motor....."
