Guests wearing white to a wedding

Hi,
I am attending a wedding early september and have found it hard to search for outfits that I would like to wear. I have found a few dresses, but they are white!
I do not know if the bride is going to wear white, but it is a church wedding. Is wearing a white dress appropraite? Obviously not a big ball gown or anything lol. I'm not close to the bride at all, only met her a few times (attending with bf - his cousin).
Thanks.

I would get OH to get his mother to find out the dress code. Lots of brides would not be happy at a guest wearing white, others wouldn't care, although most normal women would be too busy enjoying their day to care! It's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0

No, it's not acceptable. I wouldn't do it. Anything but white :-)0

I think white at a wedding to me says "bride". Some don't mind but if it was me I would think to myself that that person was trying to steal the brides thunder. I have heard other people complain that so and so wore a white dress to so and so's wedding and wasn't that sick, etc so no I wouldn't do it personally.0

Well, it must be my age but I've never heard of this before.
I would think a white dress would be fine for a Sept wedding because you'd surely have other colours on with it.0 -
I think it depends on the outfit and the time of year tbh.
I' ve got a smart white linen shift dress with black stitching detail which I'd wear to a summer wedding with no qualms. I think it's best to avoid anything too frilly flouncy that looks like you're competing with the bride!
I think it's a fairly insecure bride who's worrying what her guests wear tbh! Having said that I will always remember this picture of Raquel Welch's son's wedding. where MIL wore black!!

NO NO NO NO ... I really think a plain white/ ivory dress to a wedding is really bad taste as its the brides day and she should be the one in white. Okay if its the background and has a pattern on it but not a plain coloured one!
Just my own view though ...0 -
My mother has still not forgiven her ex-SIL for wearing white to her wedding and that was 40 odd years ago.
You could wear something with a good bit of white pattern but all white is a no no unless specifically asked. Even asking the bride whether it's acceptable could be offensive...0 -
Its like wearing crimson red to a funeral. You just dont do certain things.0

This makes me laugh, my MIL wore floor length cream on my wedding day
My dress was champagne colour.
She had two outfits and i thought she was wearing a rose numberneedless to say we don't get on! I was hurt but only because i knew it was done in spite, the comments from others were rife :rotfl:
But my sis wore a white dress with red flowers on, just depends on the dress i suppose...i personally wouldn't do it if it was plain white/cream, but thats because i love colour and white does not suit me, hence my colour of wedding dress.0
