Unauthorised transactions

  • I always try to support the OP while other members are happy to take the high road and tell everyone how much better they are by doing XYZ - there's not really in the Money Saving spirit.

However, in this case, I do not see what Nintendo or Visa could have done to prevent these transactions occurring. Your card details were entered to purchase something by someone with your card to hand to enter the "security digits" on the back etc.

If you want to claim that your card was stolen/used without your authorisation - you are labelling your son a thief.

I'd be tempted to deal with this matter "in-house" and give your son a chance to learn about money etc. He might not have understood what he's done but it's a good chance to start educating him in finance.
Please note: I am NOT Martin Lewis, just somebody else called Martyn that likes money saving!

    Bright kid!

I'm sure he didn't do it maliciously. If he did I would be worried.

If I were you I would get him to show me how he did it and work out a strategy so that it can't happen again.

As for the £45 I think you will just have to suck it up. Tell him it's his birthday/Christmas present or something.

  • Well thanks to those who actually wanted to help rather than insult me and my family. Yes he's been punished, but now I am not convinced that my details aren't stored on the bloody console and I can't see where they are if they are to remove them. I asked my son how he did it and he said he didn't need my card, and that he just went on and got points. I've worked out where to put security measures on but when I looked myself in the points shop afterwards it still wasn't asking me for the pin code id activated so I dno. As for my card, well he can't get hold of it now, and i've told him he doesn't try get points, or games, without first checking with an adult. He says he thought he was getting games from points. Anyway I don't know. Either way I think (and hope) he's learned his lesson!!

I can't see how anyone has insulted you or your family. They've just told it how it is - your son was able to access your card details and buy stuff without asking you if it was OK. Somewhere along the line you have not been careful enough to keep your card and/or personal details safe and out of the way of little hands who no doubt reckoned they were onto a good thing. However your son managed to do it, its your suspect security that has enabled him to get away with it. Its down to you and its hardly reasonable for you to expect Nintendo or your bank to pick up the tab. You asked for advice and you got it - unfortunately its not what you wanted to hear but you HAVE NOT been insulted.

Possibly suggesting your son was a thief might have appeared insulting to him but, in fairness, he used your credit details without your permission and bought stuff for himself. He wasn't planning on giving you the cash back and what he did was dishonest.

However, personally I reckon he's quite a bright child - he's latched onto the fact that you use 'plastic' without a second thought and probably sees it as not 'real money' in the way that a £20 note is. And he's managed to work out how he can do the same. I doubt that he saw his actions as dishonest or stealing and I expect he's pretty upset by the whole thing, not just because he is in trouble for doing it. You need to explain about cards very carefully and make sure he understands that , if he does anything like that again, it WILL be stealing and carry severe consequences.
