If the PM DID means test child benefit could you manage without it?

Personally at the moment i wouldn't be able to manage without CB i get an average wage and my other half is self employed so it varies week to week what he earns. I think CB shouldn't be paid to every family with children, do our premiership footballers and celebrities and those earning 100k or more a year really need CB for their children??? (assuming they claim it that is) so yes in a way it should be means tested.0

I think some people are mistaking CB for WTC ? or maybe thats just me lol isnt CB the £20(?) a week for first child, then lower for second child etc?
I couldnt/wouldnt sit at home on my butt claiming off the state - I know that unemployment etc is rife and that it is difficult to get a job right now but if you are willing to work then there is work to be found - it wont happen straight away but that wont justify living off the dole for xxxx years.
I think that they should lower the benefits people recieve - scrap CB but keep WTC as an incentive to get ppl working, scrap free housing, council tax etc. People shouldnt get more money than those who work. If you consider someone on minimum wage working 37.5 hours a week - £222.38 a week - £190.45 after tax and NI) then those on benefits shouldnt be reciving more than the £190.45. I dont think people should have their housing paid for unless they are over 65, if people on minimum wage can survive on £190.45 then so can benefit scroungers.0 -
You don't wind me up at all.....it's the system.
Unfortunately in this country, it people such as yourself that get handouts at every opportunity, have no desire to better yourselves so you can live independently from the state, and look to the taxpayer to to subsidise your lifestyle at any opportunity.
It is also a testament to yourself that you are proud to be a beggar and find no shame in that fact. There are many 1000's like you though so this is by no means a direct assault on you.
I am not a tory/lib by any means, but if they get anything at all right in their time in office, it must be to stop people like you bleeding the system dry.
I am also glad you find it impressive that myself, and others like me pay for your sorry existence.
Facts are though, that is pretty pathetic that you have no intenetions of supporting yourself.
The saddest thing of all though, is that people like you breed children that turn out exactly like you.
Actually I have 2 jobs, so if my daughter turns out like me I will be delighted. You dont get sarcasm do you.
Isnt it a shame that the father (who I was married to) who I "bred" my daughter with doesnt want to know which means I have to have 2 jobs to pay the bills and the MORTGAGE. I dont scrounge with a council house and I dont wear Ugg boots or PJ's outside either. Shock horror.
Anyway I thought you werent interested in me.
By the way there is another thread bashing CB and I see you havnt contributed. Im surprised.
Well I have to go to work now so carnt sit here arguing with you as I have to earn a living (supplemented with benefits)
By the way I cannot "breed" any more children as Iam having an early menopause.I have every possession I want. I have a lot of friends who have a lot more possessions. But in some cases I feel the possessions possess them, rather than the other way round0 -
No..it should NOT be means tested......its hould be ABOLISHED!
Why should i work harder and earn more to support others?
Another thing is that if you are responsible enough to have a child, you should be responsible enought actually pay for it's upbringing yourself.
£500 a month on a mortgage is tiny, especially on a salary of £40K+
You have £1500+ per month left over and still want more from the state.
Do you not think it's irresponsible that you are thinking of starting a family, but relying on a state handout to feed and clothe it?
Why should i pay £1200+ per month in income tax, and it goes to fund a family you may have that you cannot afford?
Have a family = Pay for it yourself
Either I have loads of money and can afford to have a family, or I can't - make your mind up. I did say £42k household income, obviously if I was to have a family this would drop as I would go on maternity leave and then hopefully work part time. I am just saying, ideally, this is what would happen. Who knows what the future will bring. I could have a baby, afford it quite easily, and then lose my job, or interest rates could shoot up and we would find it hard to pay the mortgage. In which case the child benefit would be an essential.
I should probably say that I have only been earning over 20k for a few months and prior to that I earned 17k, and the additional wages have been going into savings so I don't feel like I'm rolling in it at the moment.0 -
This is the reason why our country is on its knees.
Benefits SHOULDNT pay higher than work
I agree, they shouldnt and employers shouldnt use them as an excuse when they are slashing wages. I dont want to be reliant on any benefits but until there is decent afterschool care and a minimum wage you can actually live on I have to rely on statehandouts even though I have 2 jobs both in Local Authority.I have every possession I want. I have a lot of friends who have a lot more possessions. But in some cases I feel the possessions possess them, rather than the other way round0 -

Yes you are right but although the thread is entitled
If the PM DID means test child benefit could you manage without it?
posters are commenting on child related benefits (and others) in general now I think rather than child benefit for which any parent with responsibility for a child is currently eligible to claim
E.g I am entitled to claim Child Benefit for my children but not CTC or WTC
