ATS will do you some.0 -
The truck in the picture is a double drive as well.
If you look at the mid axle, it has 2 wheel rims, (As opposed to 1 normally.) the same as the rear, so it tells me that it could well have been running on STGO regs up to 150 tonnes. More than likely been on low loader work.
And the diesel tank is unusually high, meaning it's been on site work as well.
Also, you won't be able to get that under 7.5t, because of the wheel combination. It would still be too heavy. That's my mutt in the picture above.0 -

It's only wording at the end of the day.
As a holder of a class 1, sorry, LGV C+E, what it's called makes no difference, to drive the vehicle in the picture still needs the relevant entitlement. That's my mutt in the picture above.0 -
No. It used to be the case that if you removed the fifth wheel, that's the big plate at the back of the cab on the chassis that the trailer connects to, you could drive it on the old class 3 hgv licence, but that is now no longer the case. You still need a class 1 (LGV) licence.
And anyhow, would you want to drive something that does an average of 8 - 10 mpg, and in the case of the very modern trucks, have auto gearboxes, air con, air and heated seat, cd player, electric windows, cruise control, electric heated mirrors.........? Didn't think you would.
Don't forget the 90kph (56 mph in UK measures) speed limiter, makes modern trucks boring to drive, and is responsible for much of the bunching on motorways. Incidentally after the EU made the UK government introduce limiters; deaths of drivers on long distance work falling asleep at the wheel increased, due to the autopilot effect.0 -
The fifth wheel can be fitted, removed or painted dayglo yellow... it makes no difference!
If the vehicle weighs less than 7.5 tonnes it can be replated & all you need then is a C1 entitlement on your licence, which you will have if you passed your test before 1st Jan 1997.
When you swapped your old paper licence for a shiny new photocard, some people found the DVLA magically removed their C1 and D1 entitlement, and even gave them a motorbike licence for which they hadn't passed their test, with the car grouping removed.
But many 4 x 2 tractor units especially the old fibreglass cabbed ERF and some old Leyland, and Atkinsons will easily come in below 7.5 tonnes,
@ Quinny "As a holder of a class 1, sorry, LGV C+E, what it's called makes no difference, to drive the vehicle in the picture still needs the relevant entitlement."
I would also say you would need full C + E for that rig. which again due to EU inspired regs, you cannot get in one go. When I did my (then HGV) passing a Class 1 gave entitlement for all groups. now you apparently have to work up the classes passing a new test for each one.... ah well the government needs our money more than we do......
Truckers are lhe lifeblood of the country, Many people don't realise that without those "dirty smelly lorries" due to Beeching killing off the rural trains, no trucks = no goods in the shops.0 -
OP why not get a steam lorry. Usually zero road tax and, if you are resourceful, free fuel too.
If you pick the right one, you can drive it on your car licence.0 -
Why? I see no trailer attached.
Correct... no need for C+E if not pulling a trailer but I doubt the unit pictured would come in at less than 7.5 tonnes so a C would be needed.
MPG should be probably somewhere in the low teens when running without a load, I used to get 8 ish when loaded.Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -
It's only wording at the end of the day.
As a holder of a class 1, sorry, LGV C+E,
What you personally hold is not relevant to what is required for the pictured vehicle.what it's called makes no difference, to drive the vehicle in the picture still needs the relevant entitlement.
The relevant entitlement is class C, as I correctly stated in the part of my post you chose not to quote. If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0
