The other weekend i was at a steam fair with all sorts of interesting attractions including cider.
It came to my attention that there was a good spread of vehicles like the one below which clearly weighs a lot more than a car and takes up more space but which only has to pay £165 road tax. A quick bit of research suggests that they are taxed either as showmans transport or as private HGV.
My own little car taxc is more than £200.
What a strange anomaly. So if i buy one of these, can i drive it on my car licence if im not in the business of commercial road haulage?

Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

IMO goods vehicles like this should only have to pay an absolute minimum of road licence. They are the hardest hit with the constant rises in fuel prices. We all rely on HGVs to sustain our lifestyles, without them the country would quickly grind to a halt.0

Sorry but its the same with my Motorhome, its private HGV £165 a year. Because its over 3.5ton, If I had a small VW camper it would cost more.

The trucks can be pleasant to drive, but allow for 8 ish mpg :-) anyone not used to trucks having a go in an old E.R.F. 8 wheeler with a Gardner 150 engine would be in for a bit of a culture shock imho0 -
Yep, the govt. more than make up for the loss in licence duty by thousands of pounds a year fuel duty.0

So could i drive this on a car licence.. and would that be conditional on it being without a trailer?Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0

There is a God.
What a refreshing change to hear that. :T

No. It used to be the case that if you removed the fifth wheel, that's the big plate at the back of the cab on the chassis that the trailer connects to, you could drive it on the old class 3 hgv licence, but that is now no longer the case. You still need a class 1 (LGV) licence.
And anyhow, would you want to drive something that does an average of 8 - 10 mpg, and in the case of the very modern trucks, have auto gearboxes, air con, air and heated seat, cd player, electric windows, cruise control, electric heated mirrors.........? Didn't think you would. That's my mutt in the picture above.0 -
Driving that just to save £35 on road tax is a bit extreme!0

Yeah, I think some people think that the goods in the shops are beamed there from space and that HGV's are just out on earth to clog up the roads and get in their way.0 -
