  • I like the store Anthropologie in the US. It's quite funky and sells clothes and items for the home - lots of pretty stuff and a good range of jeans which you can't get here in the UK, or are only available at expensive shops. It's not dirt cheap, but I've bought some really nice things there which have lasted for years - and they're still cheaper than comparable stuff in the UK. Like all American stores they also have great sales.

They've got a branch in New York on Fifth Avenue.

I'd also recommend Bath + Body Works, mentioned by the poster above. Kiehls products are lovely and also much cheaper over there, although admittedly they're quite pricey to start with! Other American cosmetic brands such as Estee Lauder, Clinique, NARS etc are also lower priced than in the UK.

You are only allowed to bring about £165 of stuff back before having to pay duty. In reality, you are unlikely to be stopped if you are just a regular tourist and you haven't got tonnes of luggage. However, I always remove the labels from clothes and I have even scuffed the soles of new shoes to make them look worn! Be careful of having lots of receipts too. When I visited my friend in Chicago I did a LOT of shopping so I asked her to post the receipts on to me. Bit paranoid maybe, but I have a colleague who was stung quite badly at customs after buying a electrical goods in Hong Kong.

    Hope you have fun!

Sorry if I am hijacking this OP but I didn't think it was worth starting a new thread... We are off in December and I am thinking of going to the Toys r us on Times Square to get presents for my children. Has anyone been before? Will I have to queue in December to get in (and F.A.O Schwartz) and is there much variety over what we can get in the U.K? I am just trying to work out whether to do my christmas shopping before or whether to leave it until we are out there?

    Thanks
