New York Shopping

Can anyone help????

Next week we fly to New York and want to shop at the regular department stores where the locals would shop. The only department stores I can locate are Macys, Bloomingdales etc, all Fifth Avenue stores with Fifth Avenue prices!!!

Has anyone had any success in finding regular department sores (equivalent to BHS, M&S, Debenhams, John Lewis...) that sell ordinary non-designer clothes at ordinary prices?

If you know of any in Manhattan I would greatly appreciate your help.

Thanks

Conways is another one - probably more like our equivalent to Primark. Century 21 everyone loved which is just like TK Maxx. Although Old Navy also do wonderful reasonably priced clothes
  • The Queens Mall is meant to be good, our driver pointed it out on way back to airport.

  • Century 21 down by the World Trade Centre was is very good indeed. There are some bus trips that go to a discount mall somewhere but I dont know any more than that about it. Bloomingdales is expensive but Macys wasn't too bad - especially if they have a sale on.

  • I haven't been to New York, but I was recently in Boston and New Hampshire and went into Macy's stores there. I found them really competitive to be honest. Certainly the same sort of standard as Debenhams and John Lewis but priced a heck of lot cheaper. I got a Timberland T-shirt for $8 - found it in this country when I got back for £20. They're good for Levi's as well (for men anyway I didn't look for ladies).

Anyway, Macy's use an "International Card" which is basically a voucher to foreigners to get 11% off your shopping. The card is activated the first time you pay for something and lasts for 30 days. I got mine from a telephone number in London somewhere and can find it out if you need it, but here is a link telling you all about it so you might want to follow that instead. I basically rang up, gave my name and address and within a couple of days a couple of vouchers landed on my door-mat.

Century 21 - there are two of these in New York, one of which is very close to the Wall St metro station. It's a very large department store and you can get up to 70% off high street and designer prices. Perfect for stocking up your wardrobe and buying Xmas pressies. It's genuine designer stuff, not fakes, so impress your family and friends and save a bundle into the bargain! They also have non-designer stuff at very good prices.

Be aware that the clothing and shoe sizes are different from the UK and that the ladies changing-rooms get very, very busy and crowded!

Keep your receipts just in case customs stop you and value your goods at more than you really paid for them :>) Also, the dollar exchange rate is also in your favour.

If you're going to use a credit card warn the credit card company that you'll be using it in the USA. I didn't and they blocked one of mine (but not the other!) because of 'unusual activity'.

    Have fun!!!

  • My second post here.

I went to new york in 2004 with an empty suitcase and came back full with bargains!

To be honest the cost of shopping is so much cheaper there especially with our strong pound that I wouldn't worry too much about cost.

You have your main shops which people have mentioned but if you look around the shops located near your hotel you will find some good shops with bargains.

I found Soho (which is the area of Manhattan where I stayed) is fast becoming the trendy part of New York and there are some good shops in that area with good prices too. Plus its not too far from chinatown where you can pick up some good bargains.

But alas I am a bit of label guy so I went to the main stores and their prices compared to ours with our exchange rate, I could have bought 2 items over there for the price of 1 here!

I suggest getting your currency from your bank as they have better rates than travel agents but always look around for the best deal.

Last but not least....Enjoy your stay! I did!

I have to say although century 21 has good prices it is old seasons stock as a couple of people have mentioned, basically like tk maxx. but there are still bargains to be had there!
