Have just bought Aerial 42 wash for £6 from Tesco - on offer from £10.69.
This reduction combined with the fact that I have been inspired to experiement with using less powder means that I will hopefully save. I've also realised that I can use different brands for different things and will def use value for things like towels/bedding and other things that don't get stained/really dirty etc.
Will try Formil from Lydl as I know I said that I didn't go anywhere near it but actually DH has to drive past tonight so will send him in for a box!)
Pleased that I started this thread :))

I've just found this thread following a lecture over breakfast from my partner's mother resulting in me feeling very guilty (and just a little defensive)!

Basically, her point was that you shouldn't use products from Proctor & Gamble because they test their products on animals - and she had spotted me with my Bold 2 in 1! (This was only one of her points where I have been found wanting...)

Now, I don't agree with animal testing where it can be helped, but equally I have in the past tried to buy a more ethical product and failed to find anything that wasn't more than twice the price. I have then got stuck in a rut. I did try ecover once but wasn't impressed and went back to my old ways. But perhaps it is now time to have another look.

As an aside, I also feel that there is a lot of hype and people don't always listen to both side of the story - from P&Gs website they claim to only use animals testing when there is no alternative and in 99% of cases they use the alternative and have invested heavily in alternatives. I'm sure an animal rights activist could/would pick
holes in this of course and I am not without my suspicions.

I suspect that all the mainstream brands are owned by Proctor & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson or Unilever, all of whom probably do do some animal testing... and the own-brands will be produced by one of those..so from reading through this thread, does that just leave us with the Co-op's product, Ecover and the ball things?

The first if it can come close to the 16p a wash I have been getting with my 'evil' brands I would consider going a bit out of my way for, but ecover i've really not been impressed with and the ball things I am not convinced by. Anybody have any more tips on ethical, inexpensive, effective products that also don't inadvertently damage your washing machine?

(PS Thanks for the tip about not using liquid - I switched from powder because of the white marks on my clothes, but perhaps I was using too much!)

If you're happy with what P&G say about using alternatives to animal testing then continue to use it. If you believe what you're doing is alright then it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

Tesco value biological is great. I usually soak the whites for a day or so and the stains come out that way.

    Fine on light coloureds too.

I do use the Formil liquid for darks but use about half of the cup recommended.

Every month I bung in a bottle of value vinegar (15p) on a hot wash and it cleans the machine a treat.
