Best Value Washing Detergents

  • Hi, I also had the thick grey smelly gunge in the door seal of my washing machine. I originally used non bio powder and liquid wash and washed at 40 degrees mostly. I contacted the washing machine manufacturer and was told it was a common problem when using liquid detergent and non bio powder frequently. He advised me to only use liquid wash on occasion and every few weeks to do a 90 degree boil wash using biological powder. I followed his instructions and now use non bio for my daily washes, alongside the occasional liquid wash for my dark/coloured washes and the machine is great, no more smelly gunge and no need to buy a new door seal!
  • I used Persil Small and Mighty liquid which is fab, but noticed that the washing machine drum smelt mouldy. After reading threads on the Old Style forum, the general consensus was that liquid detergents do not contain bleach so the damp washing maching was a breeding ground for germs. I have stocked up on Bold and Ariel powder as they were both on offer recently. I will be using bio powder now for good!
  • I tired to save on washing detergent by buying Wilko's own instead of Persil non bio but is a false economy as so far after only doing one load have had to re-wash several things, it just doesn't get stains out as well, not baby inflicted ones anyway...I am thinking you just can't scrimp on some things - washing detergent being top of my list. But I would be interested to know of a way of making ironing water...I like the smelly blue Comfort one but wondering if I could make an equally as good spray some other way that would still be skin and fabric friendly....I don't want to use plain water as I use non bio and pure conditioner already my clothes never smell of anything!

    Hi there
I use ecoballs in mine and they wash really well. Initial lay out of about £20 at the beginning of the year and have only started using the 2nd one now, they come in a box of 2. Figure I would have paid far more for washing powder than that by now.

Both powder and liquid cause a build up of nastiness in the pipes. Run an empty 90 degree wash with a cupful of vinegar in the drum every couple of months or so to keep them clean.

  • thank you for this information, I have had a gungy seal for ages now and couldn't work out why as my mum has never had this but I use liquid and she uses powder.
I have had a problem with powder stains on blacks in the past but this probably won't happen if I use half quantities.

I usually use whats on offer but am rather keen on Co-op own brand powder/tablets. Do the job reasonably well even on a 30 degree wash and are often on 2 for 1. I don't have kids but my boyfriend is a mucky pup and they get his stuff clean.

They also contain no animal ingredients and are BUAV approved which is important to me. I have tried lots of different eco wash powders and they just don't clean well enough for me. Bought Bio D last month (which seems to have good reviews) and I might as well of just used water...clothes still covered in dirt and sweaty etc.

I have used Tesco Value washing powder for years. My husband was in the Army and used to come home covered in gun grease (thats tanks to us normal humans) If it can shift that, it can shift anything. As a back up I also use ace bleach if something is stubborn.

I wish more brands were BUAV approved as I feel strongly about this but very sadly my budget doesn't always stretch to the co-op/Ecover washing powder unless it's on offer. I find it frustrating that I don't always feel I have much choice but to compromise my values and then I feel bad each time I put a wash on thinking about how it was tested :( I suppose it would be best to stock up when it's on offer if I can.

Luckily I have a Co-op at the end of the street so pop in there alot and take advantage when its on offer. I also don't shop at Tesco/Asda/Sainsbury so Co-op seems cheap to me!
