pink peach, all my children when a few months old have loved sitting in front of the washing machine going round. even now every now and then my 2 yr old stops and just watches it. i enjoy seeing it tho when it gets all bubbly in the drum and watching the washing slosh around in there.

My son used to do that too :) I have a great picture of him sitting in front of the machine grinning his head off :D When he was really little I used to lay him on the kitchen floor and he would laugh his head off as I flapped the washing as I got it out of the machine too :rotfl:

  • Thanks for this thread

I always used to use powder and then changed to liquids about 6 months ago,
I tend to buy whatever is on offer 42 wash persils last week at Asda for £1.50 and today 20 wash persil for £1.00 at Asda so I have built up quite a stock.
I did notice my washer had started to smell a couple of months ago ,so I just do an occasional boil wash and it seems to get rid of it but now after reading this thread and finding out it is caused by the liquids I am going to use them up and change back to powder.

    Thanks again Deb

I have starting using Tesco value bio liquid, its 95p for a 28 wash bottle. I don't use the recommended amount so it goes even further. I mosting use a 30 degree wash and its fine, although I do the whites on a 90 every now and then with a glug of bleach to keep my chef white bright. I use washign up liquid on greasy stains and that works better than vanish spray too, and much cheaper. As someone else said, you don't get the smell, so i have started to use softener again, but again you don't need much, and I just love their new frebreeze fragrance, and its strong so you can reduce the amount of that too.

i use aerial, bold and daz mainly and usually find an offer. I wouldnt buy a value brand dont trust them and if you keep your eye out for offers no need to worry.

Today bought a big box of daz powder (25 washes for £3) great.

  • Hello, I find the value powder is fine - both Tesco and Sainsbury. For those of you saying the whites go grey try putting in some washing soda and then you should find your whites come out brighter.

I returned to Persil ( Liquid) as I found that cheaper stuff was not working. Neither did the Persil!!!!

I rang the help number and the very honest lady told me that powder is most effective, followed by tablets, then finally liquid.

TBH, I find that nothing removes stains! I never remember having stained clothes as a kid.

I used to swear by Ariel until it got too expensive, but now I use Formil from Lidl and i've found it just as good, the big green packet (biological) is about £7.00. I also add a teaspoon of soda chrystals in every wash. I tried loads of different makes of washing powders before I found Formil and I didn't lilke any of them..

I buy good quality detergent and use half the recommended amount, no effect on the wash quality whatsoever. Also I use half the amount of conditioner - again I do buy good quality brands - but I am sneaky and buy them when on offer and I can get vouchers from somewhere like supersavvyme. I bought a large bottle of Ariel colour for £3 recently (normally about £8) and Surf which was on half price from Sainsbos, plus a £1 off voucher, box of 20 liquitabs for £1.72 bargain!

The use of liquid and low temp washes does indeed contribute to the gunge build up (I work for a washing machine manufacturer :)) and doing the occasional boil wash with powder detergent is all you need to keep it clean and sweet.

At the moment, I am making my own concoction of Tesco Value bio powder mixed with 2 bags of washing soda and a small box of Tesco branded powder - mix it all together very well and use a scoop at a time in the wash. Smells nice - but then I always line dry outside too - and gets the clothes clean. It's relatively cheap too - costs me less than £6 for a mixture that will last a couple of months for a family of four, and I wash a load most days.

Just edited to say I haven't made this up recently, although I am running out, so I will have to do another batch soon, and the £6 is the price it was the last time I made it - the way prices are going, I won't be surprised if it costs a little more the next time I make it.
