Brittany ferries 24 hour return is actually valid for 24 hours in France, so you could leave Monday evening to St.Malo, arrive at 8ish on the Tuesday and get the 10ish ferry back on the Wednesday. This is actually 26 hours and can be eeked out to 29 if using Caen or Cherbourg, where they sail to more than once a day.

And you should be able use it to travel out to St Malo and back from Caen or Cherbourg or vice versa which can add even more to the time in France if the timings work out right

I think with P&O I once stretched it to 32 hours this way before they closed their routes

I normally cross the channel few time a year to visit my parents

Then why didn't you know about the 'penalty' if you broke the ticket T&C's? I've used these type of cheap fares for years and have been well aware of what happens if you break the rules!

Applies to many airlines as well read the T&C

    See this thread

BtS, what you say is correct, however, i've never heard of an airline charging you for a single for not using a return - i'd be interested to know if you or anyone else ever has?

However, i've heard of it a lot from Ferry Companies, it does not surprise me in the least.

many of the airlines do have it in their Ts&Cs (not the low cost ones where a return ticket is actually 2 singles but 'traditional' airlines that may sell you a return ticket cheaper than a single) however the reality is that the overhead to enforce it on this scale is probably massive....they maybe think the threat to do it will deter people from breaking the rules...

this is most common on long haul and is referred to as "throw away ticketing" - if you do not use the outbound the return will be cancelled, if you use the outbound and not the return then they 'could' chase you for the difference for the one-way fare

    From Delta's terms
    Prohibited Ticketing Practices

Our fares apply only to the specific itineraries for which they are quoted and the restrictions that apply to our discounted fares are an essential part of our contract with you. These restrictions make it possible for us to offer these discounted fares.
Failure to comply with applicable fare restrictions, circumventing those restrictions, or misrepresenting your intended itinerary are all violations of our Contract of Carriage.
While not an exclusive list, the following ticketing practices are prohibited:
    • Back-to-back ticketing—combining multiple overlapping round-trip tickets to circumvent Saturday or other overnight stay requirements.
    • Throw-away ticketing—use of discounted round-trip excursion fares for one-way travel.
    • Point-beyond ticketing—use of a fare published for travel to a point beyond your actual intended destination or from a point before your actual intended origin.
In such cases where there is a violation of our Contract of Carriage, we reserve the right to:
    • Cancel the remainder of the itinerary and confiscate any unused flight coupons.
    • Refuse to board the passenger or check baggage.
    • Charge the passenger for the difference between the fare paid and the fare for the passenger's traveled itinerary.
